Sewing for Dolls: Pink Sweater Set with Navy Skirt

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page for more info.  Thanks!

After way, way too much time away, I finely have gotten around to posting my next project.  More doll clothes!

A cute doll outfit. A pink sleeve less top with matching sweater, a navy blue skirt and a detachable bow pin.

One of my ball jointed dolls has been long overdue for a new outfit.  I had visions of pink and navy blue in my head, so I made this cute and classic set.  There’s a pink “sweater set”, a navy blue half circle skirt, and a tiny bow pin.  I wanted to add a cute beret, but my fabric choices weren’t cutting it.

The cute doll outfit worn by a ball jointed doll.

Here’s the new doll outfit worn by it’s cute owner.  (By the way, the headband she is wearing is made from this tutorial.)

Close up of the pink sock sweater.

The sweater set was made from a pair of pink knee socks (like these).  I just made another sock sweater and whipped up a knit top to go underneath.

The doll with the sweater removed to show off the sleeveless knit top.

The top is sleeveless because this is Arizona and Summer temperatures last into “Fall”. :(

The small ribbon bow.

The easiest piece to make was the bow pin.  Just make a tiny bow with ribbon (here’s a video for it), then flip it over…

The back of the ribbon bow showing off a tiny gold safety pin sewn on.

…And sew on a tiny gold safety pin.  Easy doll sized pin done!

Showing off the navy blue skirt worn by the doll. You can see her cute shoes too.

The skirt is another doll sized half circle skirt, just made smaller for this 1/6 scale doll instead.  I used more of the poplin fabric leftover from other projects (a dress, a costume, a bag, and still counting).

If you’re interested in making this outfit for your own yosd sized ball jointed dolls or similar sized dolls, I whipped up a tutorial for the whole outfit with patterns for the skirt and top, instructions and other links.  You can find it here on my doll blog.

Here’s the updated list:

Five down, just one more to go.  So close!

First Aid Kit to Cute Nintendo 2DS Case

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page for more info.  Thanks!

As promised yesterday, here’s the next project on my craft list.  But first, let me share something new and wonderful.

The New Nintento 2DS XL still in the box.

My Nintendo 2DS XL.

I got it (on sale!) about two months ago, and it’s been entertaining (and distracting) me ever since.

The back side of the Nintendo 2 DS XL box.

I originally was looking at the cheaper Nintendo 2DS bundles, but I went with this one because the screen was larger and it’s able to play more games.  You can compare all the features on this site.

Anyway, I thought that my nice new handheld gaming console could use a nice case to carry it along with all the games and accessories I find myself lugging around.

A red first aid kit case from CVS, the drug store.

Enter the first aid kit case, we sell it at work (I work in a CVS drug store).

There was a deal where if you bought three first aid items you would get a coupon for a free case.  Long story short, I now have five free cases.  Got to find a use for them all somehow.

The inside of the the first aid kit case, there are several built in pockets and a zippered one.

It has plenty of built in pockets and a zippered one too.  Perfect for storing plenty of things, besides Band-Aids.

The first aid kit case is great for the storing the nintendo ds, but it could be cuter.

The downside is it isn’t that cute looking.  The CVS logo screams medical supplies.

First Aid Kit to Nintendo 2DS Case.

It’s time to fix that, let’s take this plain looking case and make it super cute!

Cut two pieces of cute fabric large enough to cover the sides of the case, with a little extra on the sides to fold in the raw fabric edge.

First, I cut two pieces of fabric large enough to cover the sides of the case, plus a little extra to finish the raw edges.  I found it easier to cut some paper to the size I wanted first, and then use that as a “pattern”.

Close up of the cute fabric, it's a pink flannel with kawaii bunnies all over.

This is the fabric I used, it’s a super cute pink flannel print I found at SAS.  I bought several yards of it, so you will be seeing more projects with it.

Cut the corners of the fabric before folding back the raw edges and pinning them down.

I cut the corners of the fabric before folding and pinning back the edges.  This takes care of those raw edges.

Add pretty lace along the edges of the fabric if you want.

Then I added lace along the edges.

Pin the fabric to the sides of the case, then carefully sew along the edges, by hand or machine. It's easier by hand though.

With the fabric all prepped and ready, I pinned it to the sides of the case and carefully sewed it on with a zig-zag stitch.

I used a zig-zag stitch because I knew the stitches would show on the inside, and thought the zig-zags would look cuter.

Finish with a cute bow.

Add a bow on the front, and the outside of the case is done.

Now for the inside I wanted a little more pocket space, surprisingly.

To make an extra pouch pocket, cut fabric the same width as the other pieces and three times as long. Hem or finish the raws edges.

I cut another piece of fabric the same width as the other ones, but three times the length.  I then finished the raw edges by folding them once and zig-zaging around.

I did it that way instead of a regular hem to reduce the bulk, flannel is quite thick.

Fold the fabric at the bottom and sew on the sides to form a pocket with the rest of the fabric being the flap.

Then fold the bottom third up, sew the sides and bottom to create an instant pocket….

Sew on some Velcro to close the flap, but oops! Should have done that before sewing down the pocket.

…Only to realize afterward that I should have sewn on the Velcro before sewing the pocket.  It would have been so much easier.  Lesson learned.

sew a line of stitching or two to divide the pocket to organize supplies.

Then I stitched a line down the pocket to make two smaller ones for organizing my junk.  The one is for extra styluses, and the other is for screen wipes and other stuff.

Sew the pouch into the case along the bottom edge.

I attached it to the bottom of the case.  It kind of reminds me of a binder pencil case now.

Now the ds case is finished and ready to fill with gaming stuff.

And with that the case is finished and ready to fill.

The filled nintendo ds case filled on one side with charging cables and such.

Here I have my chargers and power bank neatly secured in their pockets.

The nintendo ds case filled on the other side with games, plus the 2 ds xl peeking out of it's pocket.

And here, I have my 2DS XL in it’s new pocket along with my game cards in their zippered pocket.

A bunch of Nintendo DS and 3DS game carts stored in tiny ziplock bags, they are actually pill pouches.

Speaking of games, here’s how I store them to keep them free of dust and scratches.  They are kept in what appears to be tiny zip lock baggies when not in use.

A medicine pouch bought from a drug store. They are perfect for storing ds games to keep them dust free and safe.

These are actually tiny medicine bags I also bought at work.  You can find them at most drug stores.  They are also handy for storing tiny craft supplies, like beads.

It’s Halloween! and a Costume!

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page for more info.  Thanks!

It took longer than anticipated to complete, but hopefully it was worth it.  My Halloween costume!

This year I was inspired  to dress as a witch for Halloween due to a couple of strange occurrences.

After weeks of designing and sewing, here’s how it came out.  Sadly, I still haven’t figured out how to take pictures of dark clothing without it looking horribly.

Diy witch cape made from an umbrella. Halloween crafts.

Anyway, the idea to make a witch costume started with the cute caplet.  It’s made from an umbrella.

Umbrella to witch cape.

That’s right, my trusty black ruffled umbrella (bought here) suddenly died on me.  Being a little too attached to it, I saved the fabric hopefully to find something to do with it.

Then I remember an idea I heard about making ponchos with umbrellas and that lead to thinking about capes.

Umbrella to diy witch cape.

After cutting the fabric open and trimming it with lace and ribbon…

…I just had to tie it in front for an nearly instant witch’s cape.  If you look carefully, you can see that the lace is the same black lace from my recent craft haul (see A Spooky Black Craft Haul).

Altering a vest for a witch costume. Halloween crafts.

Moving on, this vest and striped blouse actually came from a lucky pack (sort of like a grab bag) I bought from Bodyline recently (I forgot to mention it).

I’m afraid the pack was a bit more unlucky for me because many of the pieces in it were horrible.  These two had promise and I realized quickly that they were perfect for this outfit, with some work.  The blouse was okay to begin with, but the vest so was not.

This is what the vest looked like before I started on it.  I think they were going for an “edgy” asymmetrical look.

Anyway, after removing the odd ruffle from the neckline…

…and the odd “ruffle” from the hem…

…then sewing on more of the that black lace (By Hand!), it was perfect.  Without the odd ruffles it’s easier to notice the cute rose buttons.

The vest actually came with an odd pair of matching shorts with the same buttons.  I may need to swipe them for another project.  :)

Skirt for diy witch costume. Halloween crafts.

Now for the skirt, made with the black fabric from my craft haul.  It’s a simple full rectangle skirt with a ruffle and an elastic waistband.  Here’s a decent tutorial to make a similar skirt if you like.

diy ruffled skirt.

I added the same lace along the top of the ruffle.  It really helps bring the whole outfit together.

I keep on saying outfit instead of costume since most of the pieces actually will work with my wardrobe, especially this skirt.  Pair it with a white blouse (like this one I altered) and pretty head band (like this one I made), and I’m good to go.

Diy frilly witch costume with lace and roses. Halloween crafts.

However, we’re still thinking about Halloween here, so here’s the piece that really makes it a costume.  The witches hat.

I bought this plain hat from Target to decorate with ribbon and roses.  It’s actually the children’s hat because the “one size fits most” adult size hat was too big.  It works out well because the children’s one is a dollar less.

Diy frilly witch costume with lace and roses. Halloween crafts.

To decorate, I mostly just twisted and wrapped some wide ribbon around the brim and added a large but simple bow.

What really finishes it off is the rose piece in the center.  To make it, I twisted two roses together by their stems and covered the stems with ribbon before attaching to the hat.

The neat thing is that I used a pin back to make the rose piece removable.  So after the holiday I can wear this as a large brooch if I want.

Black hair bows for Halloween. Halloween crafts.

While I had the glue gun out for the hat and “brooch”, I also made these quick and easy hair clips with leftover black ribbon.  I thought some hair bows would be just the thing to make this witch outfit cuter.

And with that I’m ready for Halloween, at least costume-wise.  Don’t ask about the candy.

Here’s the updated list:

  • Tiny outfits

31 Cute Back to School Tutorials

This post may contain affiliate links, please see my disclosures page fore more info.  Thanks!

It’s August, which means two things.  Cooler temperatures coming and time for Back to School!

It’s strange for me to make a big deal about that since I’m been out of school forever and I don’t have kids of my own going either.  But I still get excited when I see sales on school supplies and find myself stocking up on notebooks and such, call them “office supplies”.  And these “office supplies” need a personal touch.

So let the school crafts begin.

More Pink for Baby

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page for more info.  Thanks!

So much for getting my next project up in a timely matter.  I finished this one right on time, but it only took me about a week and a half to post it.  Grrr.

Anyway, some more friends are expecting a baby, this time it’s a little girl!  So more baby stuff.  And because I couldn’t resist, it’s all pink!

Pink pillow case dress for baby.

First up is the baby dress.  It’s a pillow case style dress.  I already knew how to make it because I’ve made similar tops (including this doll version with a tutorial), but I found this tutorial for baby dresses extremely useful.  It gives you measurements to use based on the age of the baby or toddler.  Useful when you don’t have a kid to measure.

It’s trimmed with eyelet lace at the bottom, and I used some cute pink grosgrain ribbon for the ties.  All I had to do was hang it on a cute pink hanger and it was ready to go.

Decorating children's hangers.

Speaking of hangers, I bought a pack of pink children’s hangers for a dollar.  I thought that since this was a baby girl who will definitely receive lots of cute dresses from friends and family, the parents will need hangers.  They will need to store it all somehow.

Add a bow to make cute hangers.

And why not make them cute too?  Simply adding a nice ribbon bow to the top does the job.

Add a bow to make cute hangers.

And now we have a full set of cute girly hangers ready for use.  I think I might need to do this to my own hangers too.

Pretty baby headbands using tights.

To go along with the dress, and possibly all the other ones in her wardrobe, I made these cute baby head bands.  The one on the left has a eyelet lace rossette (tutorial!) accented with a pink bow made from the same ribbon as my baby dress and hangers.

The one on the right has a ribbon rose made with some ribbon left over from my Easter dress.

Pretty baby head bands using tights.

The unique part is what they are attached to, a loop cut from tights.  I got the idea from this tutorial for baby headbands.  It’s stretches enough to fit baby or even mommy’s head, but its soft and gentle.

Cute plush bunny for baby.

The final piece is this stuff bunny, because toys are mandatory.  I call it the potato bunny because the shape of the body without legs reminds me of a potato.  Strange? Yes. Cute? Definitely.

Cute baby bunny plushie.

The face is just a wee little nose made of felt and two faux pearls for eyes.  Don’t worry, I took extra measures to make them secure and baby safe.  It would take a strong force to pry these eyes off.

A simple bow makes it cute.

To finish it off, I tied on a ribbon bow.  Yep, it’s the same ribbon from the other pieces.  All the baby presents are finished.  And all that’s left is to wait for the baby to be born.

Here’s the updated list:

Three down, two more to go.  And they both will be almost as cute as the baby stuff.  Look forward to it!
