Sewing for Dolls: Pink Sweater Set with Navy Skirt

After way, way too much time away, I finely have gotten around to posting my next project.  More doll clothes!

One of my ball jointed dolls has been long overdue for a new outfit.  I had visions of pink and navy blue in my head, so I made this cute and classic set.  There’s a pink “sweater set”, a navy blue half circle skirt, and a tiny bow pin.  I wanted to add a cute beret, but my fabric choices weren’t cutting it.

Here’s the new doll outfit worn by it’s cute owner.  (By the way, the headband she is wearing is made from this tutorial.)

The sweater set was made from a pair of pink knee socks (like these).  I just made another sock sweater and whipped up a knit top to go underneath.

The top is sleeveless because this is Arizona and Summer temperatures last into “Fall”. :(

The easiest piece to make was the bow pin.  Just make a tiny bow with ribbon (here’s a video for it), then flip it over…

…And sew on a tiny gold safety pin.  Easy doll sized pin done!

The skirt is another doll sized half circle skirt, just made smaller for this 1/6 scale doll instead.  I used more of the poplin fabric leftover from other projects (a dress, a costume, a bag, and still counting).

Sewing for Dolls: Socks and Lingerie? Plus Tutorial Links

My latest craft project is doll clothes, so why did it take so long to post?  You will see shortly.

First I made several pairs of tights and socks, several more pairs to be exact.  I made some before out of old tights (see From Socks to Doll Sweaters), but I’ve gotten more ball jointed dolls since then.  Meaning more itty bitty feet to cover.

No complaints though, doll socks and stuff are fun to make and so cute.  Look at these adorable thigh high socks I made for my newest doll (her name is Misako).

And I made this pair of crew length socks for my only boy ball jointed doll (the last thing I made for him was these cute t-shirts).

And finally I made two pairs of tights, a pair for my newer doll and a smaller pair for this one (her name is Momoko).  I used a cute lacey pair of tights that had dots all over them.  I found them at 99 Cents Only Store.

The best part is that this time I managed to make some printable patterns for all theses socks and tights.  They are sized for msd (1/4 scale) and yosd (1/6 scale) ball jointed dolls, and are included with this tutorial posted on my doll blog.

Now for the more interesting part of this project. 

Doll Lingerie

As expensive as ball jointed dolls can be, sometimes they don’t even come with underwear.  So you either have to buy them separately or make them yourself. 

Naturally I went with making them.  And if I’m going to sew doll sized undies, then I’m going to make them cute!

I made these two sets from t-shirt scraps, lace, ribbon and a bit of elastic.  They were actually pretty easy to put together.

To make these underwear sets, I first did a bit of “research” mostly to figure out how to make a doll sized bra.  I found several cute doll tutorials (mostly videos), including these:

• How to Make a Monster High Doll Bra – This video does as it says, it shows how to make an itty bitty bra for a Monster High doll with lace and ribbon and such.
• How to Make a Miniature Doll Bra for Monster High Dolls – Same as above, are you noticing a pattern?
• How to Make doll panties - Victoria's Secret inspired Doll Lingerie – The matching underpants for the above tutorial, also more Monster High.
• How to: Cute Doll Underwear - DIY Bralette & Lace Underwear for BJD / Barbie – This is underwear set made from stretchy lace.  Depending on the lace you use, you could make this for almost any sized doll.

This one was the first set made.  I use thin lace for the band and the straps of the bra and used the same lace on the matching underpants.  It’s simple and cute.

For the second undie set, I used thin ribbon for the bra straps instead of lace.  Then I made little bows for the front of the bra and underpants.  For the other set I threaded the elastic through the waist, but with this one I stitched decorative elastic on to the fabric.

Sewing for Dolls: Late-ish Doll Coats for Christmas

The final project on my Christmas was actually finished right in time for Christmas.  Yay!  But I’m still extremely late posting it here.  :(

Anyway, for the final project I made (let’s see if you can guess it)…

Doll Clothes!

Okay, who saw that one coming.  Last year I made cute little felt coats for some of my ball jointed dolls, and I decided to make some for the rest.  Four more to be exact.

For these two, I used a creamy beige colored felt.

This one (for Hikaru) is trimmed with lace along the pockets and collar for cute girly touch.

And on the tiny coat (for Momoko) I added little felt bows to the pocket.

Almost all the coats have a strap on the back to cinch in the waist a little with little “buttons”.  Like last year’s coats, I used faux pearls for buttons.

This blue coat was made for my newest ball jointed doll.  Being so new she doesn’t have a name or hair, but she is still pretty in blue

Her coat is fairly simply embellished with a tiny felt flower by the collar.

For the only boy doll (Yuki), I made a simple coat with black felt.

No snaps or buttons necessary since he will only wear it open anyway.  It still needed a little something.

So I whipped up a quick scarf with some plaid scraps left over from the pouches I made.

Just cut the fabric in a rectangle, zig-zag stitch along the edge and about half an inch each end, fray the ends for fringe, and trim off the excess fabric.  Super easy.

And the result is super cute.  A tiny yet stylish scarf to complete this doll sized winter ensemble.

And I couldn’t stop at one scarf, so I made more tiny scarves for some animal friends.  Now everyone can be warm this winter.

Jeans for Dolls and a Wrap

Finally finished the next project on my list, doll clothes.  Yes, I know, more doll clothes.

It’s officially been a year since I got Usagi (a ball jointed doll), so I decided to make her a special outfit.

I made a wrap style top, a simple necklace and a pair of jeans.

The jeans were a challenge.  Pants in general are a challenge for me and I had to draft the pattern for these as well as figure out how to sew them.  It was all for the best, they came out well and I even created a printable pattern for them.

I posted a full tutorial for jeans for MSD sized ball jointed dolls on my doll blog.  Feel free to check it out if you have a doll this size or know someone who does.

The top was actually inspired by this tutorial for a cute doll dress.  Of course that one was designed for a different type and size of doll, so I had to draft my own pattern.  If you wish you can download it here on my doll blog. 

The necklace is made from tiny beads I got from SAS (see A Quick and Pink Craft Haul).  I just strung them and used a regular clasp and crimp beads.  Super quick and easy.

All together is makes for a super cute and stylish little doll outfit.

Felt Coats for Dolls, for Winter?

The final project on my craft list is another doll clothes craft.  Yay! Doll clothes!

I made three doll coats using craft felt.  I know, it’s March, but it’s still a little chilly at night here.  Also, if I didn’t make them now I may never get down to it.

Anyway, I made one for one of my larger ball jointed dolls and two for each of my smaller dolls (you can see their reaction on the doll blog).

The pattern for them is based on the one for the doll sweaters I made before (see From Socks to Doll Sweaters), just with some added pockets and collars.  Plus, they are slightly larger because felt doesn’t stretch like socks.  I used tiny faux pearls as “buttons” on the front and back of each coat.

To personalize each one, I decorated the tiny pockets.  For this one, I made tiny bows from felt.

And on this one, I added some scraps of lace to the pockets.

They look so adorable in their tiny dolly coats. :)

My larger doll looks cute too.

Her coat is decorated with little hearts cut from scraps of the felt.  Adds an adorable touch to it.  I’m thinking of making her a matching hat with hearts too.  Maybe next time.

Tiny Blue Lace Dress for A Doll, and a Tutorial?

It has been a while since I made anything for my ball jointed dolls, and one particular doll has been waiting a long time for something to wear.

This is Yuna, a 1/6 scale ball jointed doll that I got last November.  Until now the only thing I had made for her to wear was a sweater (see From Socks to Doll Sweaters) to pair with a borrowed dress from one of the other dolls.

But now she has this adorable little blue doll dress to wear.  It is made from a scrap of blue cotton left over from a Halloween costume (see Halloween = Tulle) with a little bit of lace. 

I decorated it with tiny pearl beads and a tiny rosette and ribbon bow.

And for those who have ball jointed dolls this size or similar sized dolls, I have a little treat.  I made a sewing tutorial for this dress on my doll blog.  It includes a free downloadable pattern.  Feel free to check it out.

In addition to the dress, I whipped up a simple little felt bag and a cute lace headband.  The bag is made the same way as the felt doll purses I made last summer (see 5 a Week: Cute Felt Bags for Dolls with a Tutorial).

The headband is just some lace with a bit of elastic at the back.  Super easy to whip up and super pretty.  I think I want to make some more, for me and my dolls.

Overall, it makes for one cute little dolly outfit.  And there are more to come later.

From Socks to Doll Sweaters

Well, two weeks later (argh!) I finished the next project on my craft list.  A recycling project too!

For this project, I had some old socks and tights to turn into something new and cute.

Doll Clothes!

The socks became cute little sweaters using this tutorial, sort of.  The pattern for the tutorial was for 1/3 scale ball jointed dolls, mine are smaller than that.  They are 1/4 and 1/6 scale dolls.

So I had to make my own patterns.  If anyone is interested, I decided to post the patterns on my doll blog.

With the tights I made actual doll tights and socks.  Two pairs black tights, two pairs of white tights in two sizes, and three pairs of white sock in two sizes.  Whew!

But they are quick and pretty easy to make, even by hand.  Actually I made all these sweaters and legwear by hand sewing except the first sweater.  Machine sewing is not recommended at all.

Anyway, this first sweater (for Hikaru) is made from a navy blue knee sock that didn’t fit right.  Knee socks are great for this because you get plenty of material to work with.

The sweater has lace along the neckline and a row of faux pearl bead “buttons” down the front.  It closes with sew-on snaps.

The tights, I think are pretty much fool proof to make.  The material is stretchy enough to fit well and hide any goofs you make while sewing.

Now doesn’t her outfit look so cute, and perfect for an Arizona “winter”?

I made this sweater (for Usagi) with the other navy blue sock.  It has thin ribbon along the neckline and bottom hem and closes just at the top with a snap.  I added a “large” button at the top “to close” it.

In addition to tights, I made this doll a pair of thigh high socks.  They are basically tights with the top cut across and hemmed, and no elastic needed.

Paired with a plaid skirt, it kind of looks like a school uniform.  She just needs more appropriate shoes.

And finally, I made these two cute white sweaters using little bobby socks.  Smaller socks for smaller dolls.

They are both embellished with ribbon bows and more pearl “buttons”.

The tights came out just as well on this smaller doll as with the larger dolls.  It makes me wonder how easy it would be to make tights for fashion dolls, like Ever After High dolls.

The socks are knee length and are super quick to make.  I found they look cute both when worn to the knee and when scrunched down at the ankle.

They both are so adorable now all bundled up.  All the dolls look so cute, it makes me want to make more sweaters.  I guess it’s time to dig out more socks.
