Cute Navy and Pink Pocket Tote Bag with Tutorial

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page for more info.  Thanks!

The next project on my craft list is a practical one, but still cute and with a tutorial too!

Cute Navy and Pink Pocket Totebag with Tutorial

I needed a new tote bag to lug around my stuff on weekends.  One that was sturdy, wouldn’t stain easily, and of course would look cute.

So, I picked out two different fabrics and came up with this blue and pink bag.  It’s trimmed with lace and has a cute printed pocket on the outside and one on the inside as well.

To make one for yourself you will need:

  • 2 contrasting fabrics, about 1 yard of each.
  • Matching thread
  • Basic sewing supplies
  • Basic sewing knowledge
  • (Optional) Interfacing, see below.
  • (Optional) Sewing machine, hand sewing is possible.
  • Lace or other trim, about 2 yards.
  • (Optional) DVDs, Netflix, etc. because movies and sewing projects go well together.

Cut two squares of fabric for the inner and outer side of the bag. Mine are navy blue and a pink print with cute bunnies.

These are the fabrics I used.  One is some navy blue poly poplin I had leftover from a dress and a costume, this is for the outside of the back.  It’s a nice color that won’t show dirt easily.

For the inside (or lining) of the bag I used more of the that cute pink flannel I used for my 2DS Case.  Told you it would pop up again.

I didn’t bother with interfacing because both of my fabrics are pretty thick, but I recommend it for thinner or easily wrinkled material.  You will want to use it on the pockets, straps, and the outer fabric.

Anyway, cut 2 squares of fabric about 20 x 20 in. (51 x 51 cm.) from each of your fabrics.  This makes a bag that’s large enough to carry my laptop, you may wish to make yours a little smaller.

Cut two rectangles for pockets from the cute inner fabric.

Next, cut two rectangles 9 x 15 in. (23 x 38 cm.) from your inner fabric.  These will be pockets, one for the inside and one on the outside.

Hem the top edge of the pockets.

Proceed to hem the top edge of each pocket.  If you are going to add lace to the pocket, this is the time to do it.

Pinning and sewing on the pockets.

Fold back the other edges of the pocket and pin to one of the squares of inner fabric before sewing down the pocket.  Repeat with the outer fabric.

The pink pocket sewn onto the navy blue fabric.

After sewing on the pocket, you can sew a line down the center to divide it into two pockets.  This is purely optional, but fun.

Pin the sew around the bag.

Now it’s time to start assembling the bag.  Pin the two squares together with right sides facing, then sew the sides and bottom.  Repeat for the inner fabric as well.

Sewing the corners to form a flat bottom bag.

Here I have my “lining” with the bottom corner turned and pinned flat.  I just sew along the pins, repeat on the other corner and…

The bottom is now flat!

…boom!   Flat bottomed bag!

Just need to repeat for the outer fabric part.  Of course, this is optional, but it’s a nice little detail.  If you need more help, here’s a great video tutorial for doing this.

Sewing the lining into the bag.

Almost done now.  Stick your lining into the outer part with rights sides together and pin them along the top edge.  Sew around the top, but leave a hand size bit open.

The tote bag is almost done!

When you finish sewing, turn it all “right side” out,  then carefully tuck your inner part into your brand new bag!

Topstitching the top of the bag.

Well, it’s almost a bag.  Pin along the top edge again and top stitch to close the unsewn part and to make the bag neat.

And now the body of the bag is complete.  Let’s get those straps done.

Cut long strips for the straps.

Cut two long rectangles 3 x 26 in. (7.5 x 66 cm.) for each strap.  I chose to use pink on one side and blue on the other of each strap, but do what you like.

Pin and sew the straps.

With right sides together, pin and sew along the long side of each strap, leave the ends open. Then carefully turn them right sides out.  This might take sometime, but that’s why we watch movies while sewing.

Sewing around the straps.

After turning, tuck the ends in and pin along all around the straps before sewing along the edges.

Attach the straps to the bag.

Pin the straps on the bag where you want them.  Try the bag on before sewing the straps in place.

Add some lace to complete the cute tote bag.

Now you can add some lace or trim along the top edge of the bag.

Confession: I added the lace too soon and it got in my way.  I also forgot to add the pocket lace before sewing the pocket on the bag, so I had to do it by hand afterwards.  :(

The finished navy blue bag with cute pink pockets, lining, and lace trim.

Anyway, now the bag is done and ready to haul all your junk, but in a cute way!

Here’s the updated list:

Four down, just two more to go.  The next one will be up fairly soon, try to guess what it will be.

Give it a try:

Sewing Pouches, Lots of Them

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page for more info.  Thanks!

The next craft project on my Christmas list involved a lot of sewing.

Sewing lots of differnt pouches using leftover fabric. Great for easy diy gifts.

I made pouches.  Lots of different pouches.  They make great Christmas presents, especially if you fill them with little goodies like I’m going to do. :)

One of the great things about pouches is how versatile they are.  All of these ones were made basically the same way, a few tweaks to the design makes a huge difference.

The two on the left here were made from the kitty cat fabric I bought recently (see A Late Black Friday Craft Haul).  Now they work as a fun purse and a small clutch.

The pouch on the right is made from leftover fabric from a baby project three years ago (see Sewing for Baby).  That’s the nice thing about pouches, they help use up your leftovers.

For some of them I curved some or all of the edges.  It adds a nice touch, especially to smaller bags.

I could have used buttons, loops, snaps, etc. to close them, too many options.  I chose soft Velcro because it was easy and I always have it on hand.

Pouches are also nice because you can make them for just about anyone, including guys.  These plaid ones are nice, but not as girly looking as they could be.

I added small straps to the back because sometimes it’s nice to have a strap to hold on to, but something longer would make it look too much like a purse.

The last two I made using more leftover fabric from a skirt I made sometime ago (see Just in Time for Christmas?).  The size and long straps make them look like pretty messenger bags.

That’s all I made, this time.  They’re fun to make and handy to have, so I will probably make more pouches in the future.

If you want to make some of your own, this envelope purse tutorial is very similar to my pouches.

Here’s the updated list:

Three down, just one more to go, and just four days until Christmas.  Getting so close, wish me luck!

31 Cute Back to School Tutorials

This post may contain affiliate links, please see my disclosures page fore more info.  Thanks!

It’s August, which means two things.  Cooler temperatures coming and time for Back to School!

It’s strange for me to make a big deal about that since I’m been out of school forever and I don’t have kids of my own going either.  But I still get excited when I see sales on school supplies and find myself stocking up on notebooks and such, call them “office supplies”.  And these “office supplies” need a personal touch.

So let the school crafts begin.

Pink Lace for Easter

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page for more info.  Thanks!

Well, a few days after Easter and I’m finally getting around to posting this.

It’s my Easter dress!

Pink all over lace dress for Easter.

I used that over all lace fabric I bought as SAS (see A Quick and Pink Craft Haul).  I wanted something pink and floral this year and while thinking about that I got the idea to use lace.

Ribbon roses on neckline of an Easter dress.

I made little roses from ribbon to decorate the neckline.  It took a while because not only did I have to make each one by hand, but I also had to re-learn how to do it.  It’s been a while since I last made them.

Funny thing is that the last time I made ribbon roses was also for an Easter dress (see Time for Some Catching Up).  Actually a lot of the design for this dress was inspired by that dress.

I added little faux pearl beads to the center of each rose for an added touch.

Ribbon at the waist on a pretty pink dress.

I used a wide ribbon the same color as the roses as a sash around the waist.

Short sleeves on a pretty pink dress.

The “sleeves” are made solely from the lace, so they have a sheer appearance.  I originally wanted to make a section on the front of the bodice with just the lace, but I thought that might be a tad too revealing.  Not to mention too complicated and time consuming to complete in such a short time frame.

Ribbon and lace on a pink dress.

Instead of hemming the edge of the lace of the skirt, I added ribbon to finish it.  It helps to balance out the top.  It wasn’t exactly the easiest thing I’ve ever sewn.  Those who sew lace and netting a lot would understand.  And I think I would recommend using clips instead of sewing pins.  The pins mostly got in my way and snag the ribbon.

Now for the accessories, because why make a pretty dress without completing the outfit?

Beautiful flower head band for Easter.

I made a pretty headband using the pink and white flowers I bought from SAS.  I actually had to make it twice.  The first time it looked pretty, but I realized it didn’t look as pretty on my head which is necessary for a “head” band.  So I took it apart and put it back together again.

Simple and pretty pearl necklace.

I also made a necklace of faux glass pearls to help tie in the headband and stuff.  I bought these pearls ages ago at Joann.  Makes for a simple yet pretty necklace that I can wear with just about anything, super plus.

Pretty pink purse to match a pretty dress.

Since I bought a ton of fabric, I whipped up a matching purse too.  It’s simple little bag with a flap, similar to several I’ve done before.  The flap closes with Velcro.  I normally use snaps, but I was lazy this time.  It’s so much faster to use Velcro, at least when you use a sewing machine.  I made a larger ribbon rose to finish the bag.

Ribbon rose shoe clips to match a pink Easter dress.

Speaking of larger ribbon roses, I made a pair of them to make the final accessory, shoe clips.  Because my cute white shoes needed a little something to tie them in with the rest of the outfit.  I made them just like the shoe clips I made last year (see Lace Rosette Shoe Clips with a Twist and Tutorial).  A simple and cute way to finish off a pretty pink outfit.

Here’s the updated list:

  • Dress
  • Accessories
  • Jeans
  • Baby
  • Little dress

Two down, three more to go.  I’m running late with the next two, but I should have them up soon.  Look forward to it.

Purple and Lace Bag Upgrade, Adding a New Lining

First project on my list is actually an update to a previous craft project.

Remember that purple tote bag I made (see Catching Up: Bags and More Bags)?  It was a super pretty bag that could be expanded as needed.  Perfect for everyday use.  And since making it I got quite a bit of use out of it.

And it certainly shows, and I’m not talking about all those stains which are bad enough.

Purple and Lace Bag Upgrade, Adding a New Lining

I used that pretty tablecloth fabric for the lining, and it took a major beating.

The easy thing would have been to just make a whole new bag, but I really like this one.  So instead I just made a new lining.

So here’s the before…

…And after.

I first carefully cut out the old lining and tossed the bag in the washer.  Cleaning alone did a world of good.  While I waited for it to dry, I got to work on the new lining.

Here are two of the sides, this is before sewing them in the bag.

I used the same purple poplin as the rest of the bag (thank goodness for leftovers) and something else for the pockets, white fleece.  It’s super soft, strong, and a little stretchy.  Perfect for pockets to hold all of life’s essentials.

Purple and Lace Bag Upgrade, Adding a New Lining

Here’s the finished bag lining.  Looks so much better than before.

And here it is in action.  Now everything is nicely organized, for now.

Here’s the updated list:

  • lining
  • patterns
  • lace
  • pins
  • scraps
  • fabric
  • supplies
  • uniform

One down, seven more to go.  And with not even a full week to do it, better get cracking.

Just Several Pretty Lace Accessories…

Finally some crafts from my list to show off.  Still have more to do before Easter, but at least these are complete and ready to share.

Pretty Off White Floral Print Purse with Eyelet Lace

I bought this pretty off-white floral print fabric for a particular project and I thought it would be great to use some of it for a small simple purse too.  One that I could wear with tons of different outfits instead of just that particular project.

Pretty Off White Floral Print Purse with Eyelet Lace

I made this bag roughly based on this easy messenger bag tutorial, just with a few little touches.  It came out ok, except I think I goofed a little on the edges where the strap is attached.  The strap by the way is made by twisting together four strands of ribbon into a cord.  I learned how to do it when I was about 10 years old.

DSCI5906 (800x658)

The purse is nicely trimmed with cream colored lace. I bought the lace years ago at SAS for $1 and have used it in tons of projects since.  I think it look great with this fabric.  The funny thing about the fabric is that when I got it home I realized I already had the exact same fabric in white instead of off-white.  I bought the white at Wal-mart and used it to make a dress (see Time for Some Catching Up).

Close Up of Lace Rosette Pin on Off-white Purse

The cute lace rosette on the flap is actually a pin.  I thought it would nice to be able to swap it out with other pins and broaches to make it easier to match different outfits.

Pins made from lace, ribbon, and fabric yo-yos

Speaking of other pins and broaches, I whipped up these four.  The two on the left are made from lace and fabric yo-yos with some ribbon bows.  The ones on the right are just bows made from wider ribbons with pin backs sewn on.  Simple yet effective.

Simple Pretty Lace Rosette Hair Clips

I also whipped up these simple hair clips using more lace rosettes with more of that cream colored lace.

Simple Pretty Lace Rosette Hair Clips

I just used hot glue to attach the rosettes to some clips.  I covered the clips with some ribbon first to make them look better, plus it helps the rosettes stay on better too.

Lace hair clips decorated with red ribbon pins

The beauty of these simple clips is that I can dress them up a bit if I want to by adding some of the pins.  See how well they look with the red ribbon pins?

Here’s the updated list:

  • dress
  • hair accessories
  • small bag
  • pins
  • clips
  • doll clothes
  • video

Three down, four more to go.  The next project will be up in a couple of days, but here’s a little sneak peek.

Preview of next projects using red floral fabric, lace, and ribbon.

Some lovely red floral fabric trimmed with lace and more red ribbon.  Still sewing down the ribbon by hand.  But what is it that I’m trimming?

Preview of next project made with lace and floral print fabric.

And here is a panel of fabric embellished with pin tucks and lace.  Now where is this going?  You will find out soon.  Look forward to it.
