Happy Halloween

What a Treat, A Halloween PoemWhat a Treat

Halloween is here with trick-or-treating tonight.
So I’ll tell you the story of a man named Dwight.

Dwight’s fondest wish was to give out some treats
that would be the best most brilliant on his street.

He would fill his bowl with all sorts of goodies galore
that would leave the children begging for more.

He went in search for them, the best he could find.
With the sweetest and sugary-est, surely he’d shine.

And with his bowl full of crunchies, he set his place near the door,
Set ready to welcome the trick-or-treating hoard.

First came one ghost, then a princess and such.
Seeing the bowl, they made such a fuss.

Until a vampire shouted from up the way
which made the children scurry away.

Apparently Mrs. Johnson from up the street
was giving out apples and Oh! what a treat!

Signs of Amusement #2

A few of you may be thinking “#2, when was #1?”  It was last July actually (see Signs of Amusement), it isn’t that I have not seen any unusual signs in like ten months, just that I haven’t seen any while my camera was ready.

Anyway I saw this while walking to class this week.

It’s a delivery for a local store, and as I’ve always thought they are packing stores with use-less stuff to try to get us to buy them.  Actually in this case it’s “un-usable” stuff.  Hey, it made me crack a smile.

History Lesson: Mood Rings

History Lesson: Mood Rings
This is my mood ring.  I received it as a gift about eight years ago and surprisingly it still sort of works.  I had it stashed in a drawer for a while and started to wear it again recently.  Staring at it made me wonder about moods rings so I did a little research.  Very little in fact.

According to an article from About.com: Chemistry, the mood ring was invented by Joshua Reynolds and were popular in the 70’s. They supposedly change color according to your mood, though really they just react to your body temperature.

Thermotropic liquid crystals in mood rings respond to changes in temperature by twisting. This twisting changes their molecular structure, altering the wavelengths of light that are absorbed or reflected.  Those wavelengths thingies determine what color things are, at least that’s how I understand it.

When your body temperature is normal, the crystals are green or maybe blue.  When your temperature rises, they turn violet or blue.  When you’re stressed, blood flow is directed away from your fingers to your organs making the temperature of your finger colder, thus turning the ring yellowish.  And in cold weather, or if the ring is busted, the crystals turn blackish.  Judging by the photo, I might have been under a little stress.

So the colors in a nutshell:
  • violet blue - happy go lucky
  • blue - calm, relaxed
  • green - average, so-so
  • yellow/amber - excited
  • brown/gray - nervous
  • black – freezing or ring is busted
Now you can say you learned something today, or at least that you knew more than I did before.

Fuzzy Wuzzy and Solid

photos 116

A bit ago, I was walking along Main St., and I noticed one of the statues.  I know there are tons of them along the street, but I particularly like this one.

photos 115

Mainly because of this little guy.  I thought the baby bear was just so cute, so I had to take a picture.

Judging by the price tag here, a photo is the only thing I could afford.  Yikes!

A Short Film for Fun

I couldn’t sleep last night and I thought of a great idea, so I stayed up till about 2 am finishing it.

photos 001

It’s a short film staring these two characters.  They are made from felt and fabric scraps, beads, a little glue, and twist-ties.  So far I made a short preview for them.  I want to make more eventually, so please stay tuned.  And please excuse the amateur quality, although I think that’s part of it’s charm.

Without further ado, here’s Kailey and Boris.

No Zzzzzzzz

photo_937_20081007 Saturday night my brother introduced me to the wonder that is visual novels.  These are hard to describe but it’s like a cross between a King’s Queste style adventure game and an e-book.  To the point, I found myself staying up to 5am reading.  What’s worse, last night I got absolutely no sleep at all.  (This is the one that kept me up, be careful.)  It’s not the first time I have had to deal with this kind of thing.  I recall when reading one of the Harry Potter books being unable to go to sleep until I find out what happens next and in the next chapter and et cetera, until I looked up noticed the sun was rising.  Don’t even ask about the Septimus Heap series.  What is it about these long epic stories that keeps me sleep deprived?  They’re just too stimulating for me the first time.  Again, it’s that “gotta see what comes next right now” thing.  And the visual novels are worse because most are interactive with alternate endings, so once you finish you want to start again to see what happen if you do this, this, and this.  Maybe I should just stick with Archie comics, they just put me to sleep.  Not because I find them boring, hardly.  They’re just more relaxing.  Yep, nothing like a relaxing book with a soothing cup of chamomile tea.  Sweet dreams.

Perfect Kitty Album, Nope!

photos 061 I wanted to get a few good pictures of my cat, Midnight which wasn’t easy because she wouldn’t hold still.  My photography skills are crummy enough without having to shoot a moving target.  See here how she instinctively looks away when I point the camera at her.

photos 062

Here I was super lucky.  Although technically she isn’t looking straight at me, but it's close enough.

 photos 063

Here’s about a second later, see it’s instinct, she’s avoiding the camera.

 photos 064

So close, but no dice.

photos 065

Here is the blur of her moving away.

 photos 067

And again.

photos 068

Look at me will you.

photos 069

Success!  Except, now she’s got that creepy glowing eye thing that makes people scared of cats.  Whatever, she’s fine.

photos 070

Oops, there she goes again.

photos 071

And again, ironically she is moving around so much in order to get my attention.

photos 075

Ah, the easy way to get her to hold still, and she’s looking at me too, or is that glaring?

photos 074

Just let her enjoy her meal.  Bon appétit Midnight.

Another Tribute

photos 040“M”ore of it ends up on my hands then on my project.

“O”pen easily, it certainly doesn’t.

“D”on’t ask me how to keep it from sticking.

“P”lease let it stop dripping,

“O”n the floor or on my chair,

“D”own my shirt and in my hair.

“G”ot it finally on all right.

“E”verything now has turned out right.

I was inspired to write this when my jar of Mod Podge glued itself closed.  I had to get my “little” brother to open it.

Stranger than Fiction

photos 021

I was walking to the library again, and I saw something odd crawling across the sidewalk.

photos 019photos 018

I thought it might be some breed of cockroach or something out for a stroll.  It was over 3 inches long and jaws about 1/2 an inch wide.  It was also super fast, but apparently it had problems walking across leaves.  All I could do was stare at it, it’s like watching an accident, you can’t look away.

Signs of Amusement

photos 008

I noticed this while walking to the library.  I thought it was kind of amusing, especially considering what was below it.

photos 009

As you can see here, cars are an exception.  I guess it technically doesn’t say no cars allowed on the sidewalk.
