Looking Back at Old Posts: My Crafting Space

While editing a recent post, I noticed the thumbnail of a much older post that really caught my eye.

This photo says so much.

Looking Back at Old Posts: My Crafting Space. Here's my craft and sewing space from over 13 years ago in a complete state of messy chaos.
It's a photo of my old craft and sewing space at it's absolute worse. Such chaos, but I absolutely love it.

Looking through it all, I can remember so much. For almost every item in this picture, I can remember exactly why it is there and what project it was for if any.

Examples:

Looking back at Old Posts: My Crafting Space. Here's a doll dress I made ages ago.
The scraps of black and white striped knit fabric were leftover from the t-shirt to dress I made for my nephew's Cabbage Patch Kid doll when he was little (see T-Shirt Redo for a Doll, a Tutorial).

Looking back at Old Posts: My Crafting Space. Here's a cute porcelain doll wearing a blue dress with a matching lace headband.
The porcelain doll in the up right corner wearing a blue dress was a doll I found at a thrift store. I gave it a makeover before this (see Prettied Up).

Looking back at Old Posts: My Crafting Space. Here's a Bratz I made over. It has a pretty pink dress with lace, and it's hair is done up in a curly updo. There's even lace earrings.
Next to the doll is a Bratz doll that also received a makeover (see Pretty in Pink).

On the desk is a purple pencil box I bought at a back to school sale from Office Max. I was using it for sewing supplies, I later switch to using if for actual pencils and erasers, and now I use it for small electronic items. That's right, I still have it over 13 years later. Those things are built to last.

The chair was given to me by a friend from church. She gave me a ride home and just happen to have it in the trunk of her car intending to drop it off at a thrift store, but offered it to me instead. The desk came from a neighbor, similar store.

Above the small white drawers, you can see a cat face. That's from cute paper book cover I got in high school for my textbooks. I kept it for years before using it to cover an aluminum can to make a pencil holder.

Looking back at Old Posts: My Crafting Space. Here's a basket I decorated with ruffled lace around the edge a lace wrapped around the handle. It's full of spools of lace and ribbon.
Above the chair, you can see a basket covered with lace. It's a basket I save from being tossed. I decorated it with lace and used to store my lace and other trims (see Decorating and Launching).

And that's just a handful of memories.

Makes me want to go through all my old photos and posts, maybe there's a few more memories to share later.

Look forward to it.

Looking Back, Blogging Then and Now

Blogging Then and Now, How My Blogging Has Changed over the Years.

I mentioned that one of the things I did over my break was go through several of my old, old posts.  It would surprise some of you to realized that this blog is actually almost 11 years old.

That’s right, I’ve been blogging off and on for over ten years now.  There have been a lot of changes over the years with blogging both big and little.  I won’t dwell much on the big changes, since we’ve all heard them.  It’s the little changes though, the ones I didn’t quite notice myself until I went though my old posts.  Things I started doing or not doing in my own blogging.

Daily Posting?

When I first started blogging, I posted something everyday, whether it was necessary or not.  Mostly because blogging was so new and fun and I couldn’t hold back my enthusiasm.  That kind of went down hill though.

Life gets in the way, and going to school was higher priority.  I was constantly going several days without posting anything, something I do now too.  But I kept on apologizing for it as if I thought there was something wrong with not posting something almost daily.  I saw many blogs doing just that, and many still today.

In fact, I used to follow a few blogs that posted multiple times a day.  The keywords there is “used to”.  Some of those blogs disappeared, possibly because the author couldn’t keep up their daily schedule.

As for the ones that still exist, I stopped following them because I couldn’t keep up.  Too many posts to read, and not all of them were ones I was interested in reading.  I have since learned that you don’t have to read absolutely every post written by your favorite blogger.

Anyway, it’s difficult to read the posts you are interested in if they get lost in the sea of everything else going up on a blog every single day.  So, the daily posting thing is definitely not mandatory.

Commenting

It’s funny how back then people left comments on blog posts more often even if some of them seemed a little more “spam-y” then intended.  It’s also funny that despite receiving more comments on posts back then compared to now, I still managed to reply to most of them.  Nowadays, it sometimes takes me weeks and even months to reply to some comments.  If I reply at all.  Why was it easier before?

It wasn’t, I just felt like I had to, like replying was mandatory just like with daily posting.  It’s not, just like how it isn’t mandatory for people to leave comments on blogs.  It’s just a nice way of showing appreciation (I wrote a whole other post about that).  It’s one of many ways to do so now.

Over the years, more and more social media sites have popped up, meaning more and more ways to show your favorite blogger that you like their stuff.  And it works both ways.  For example, when someone pins one of my posts or videos on Pinterest, I can check out their boards and re-pin their stuff too.

Spam?

Just a bit of a rant.  Way back when, many commenters were pretty borderline spam-y, but unintentionally so.  Just many innocent people who got it in their head that commenting on other blogs is a great way to get traffic back to their blogs, etc.

However, lately the spam comments make no sense at all.  Many don’t bother to leave a link, so what’s the point?  I have receive spam comments that were several paragraphs long about topics like Game of Thrones or random tech stuff.  Stuff that never appears on any of my blogs.  If the point is to make me laugh before I delete them, thanks.

Photography

Good news! I’ve notice that my photos, though not exactly perfect have definitely improved over the years.

poor photos

Many photos from my older posts are so blurry or way too small.  I’m surprised people could see what I was trying to share at all.  Many years of practice and checking out tips on other blogs have paid off.  So if you think your photos stink, check out one of my old photos and know, things will get better.  You will improve.

Another problem was most of my posts only had one photo, which is fine for posts that are mostly rants and such.  But craft and sewing projects should have more pics to show off the projects.  People like seeing little details, the cute lace on the edge of a hem and beading on a neckline.  The more photos the better.

Formatting

See all that nice space between the sections and paragraphs on this current post?  See the cool looking headings?  That’s proper formatting, it breaks up the post to make it easier to read.  Now compare it to the one in the photo.

bad formating

In my early days, I didn’t do much in the way of formatting at all.  My post were huge blocks of text, sort of like high school essays and we all know how much fun those are to read.

I also had issue with my photos, not just in how they looked, but where they were placed.  They cut off sentences and squeezed those blocky paragraphs in odd ways.  I surprised people could read my posts at all.  And if people can’t read your posts they aren’t likely to come back for more.

Thankfully my newer posts are a bit easier on reader eyes.

Post Titles

The first few years, I liked to be “creative” when writing titles for my posts, titles that by today’s standards would look a little too vague.

An example of a too vague post title.

As in they were sometimes a little hard for readers to even understand.

Enter SEO or search engine optimization which requires titles with relevant keywords.  Harder to get “creative” titles, but easier for readers to know what your post is about and to find a post they actually need when they need it. Easier for me too, since I frequently have to look up my own blog posts too.

These are just a few of the changes I noticed.  Veteran bloggers, how many of these applied to you?  And what other things have you seen over the years.  Please share.

Something to Do While It’s Quiet

I just wanted to warn you that it’s going to be a little quiet here for the next month or so.  I’m taking a little break from updating this blog to work on a few other things.

But just in case you get a little bored, here’s a few suggestions.

Stuff to check out like my ball jointed doll blog and maze blog..

If you haven’t already done so by now, try checking out my doll blog, From a Doll’s Eyes.  It’s mostly about ball jointed dolls and written mainly from the point of the view of my first doll, Hikaru.  If you like dolls in general, tutorials, cute photos and amusing stories, you will love it.

Stuff to check out like my maze blog and doll blog.

You can also check out my maze blog, Simply Mazes.  It’s been a little quiet on there, but I’m trying to get it rolling again with a new maze at least every other week.  Feel free to browse all the mazes available.  These particular mazes may prove useful in the next month (hint: Valentines’ Day).

Find Me on Pinterest

For a bit more variety, try visiting me on Pinterest.  I frequently pin tons of stuff I find like funny videos, recipes, doll stuff, holiday stuff, clothing tutorials, and more.  If you prefer, I also share stuff on Twitter and Google+.

I hope you enjoy all I have to offer and I shall return with more.  Look forward to it.

New Year’s Resolutions 2016 to 2017

It’s a new year, a time for reflecting on the past and looking forward to the future.  And that means setting goals.

This is something I attempted to do last year (see 2016 New Year's Resolutions), but I wasn’t as good about updating you all about my resolutions (my last update was 9 months ago!).

New Year's Resolutions for last year and this year.

So here’s how I did:

Make more tutorials

My goal was to make 12 tutorials last year and I made 10.  Two shy, but that’s not too bad.

Here’s all the tutorials for 2016:

Reduce craft stash

This one was mostly successful thanks to the basket trick I used (see Major Craft De-Stash, Part 2).  The problem was in staying away from craft stores.  Thanks to that, I think my craft stash is almost a large as it was at the beginning of the year. :(

Exercise and Stretch

I put these two goals on hold to focus on the others, but I found I made some progress on them anyway.  I found myself squeezing in small bits of exercise most days without thinking about it.  And stretching too, especially during slow periods at work.

Save money

I changed this goal from building up my savings account to paying down my credit card.  I’m happy to say that I brought the total balance down to $1000 and should have it completely paid off in less than two months.  Yay!

Clean out my closet

This goal was was successful too because of the basket trick, sort of.  My closet and drawers are full of clothes that I love that actually fit me, and now I can actually close the door.  The problem is I also have bags of clothes that don’t totally fit me, but I love them enough to alter them.  I just need to get to them all.  I at least made some progress on that this year (see Blue Plaid Revisited, a Dress Makeover).

Despite a few issues, I’m pretty happy with how the year turned out.  But now it’s time to look forward.

So here’s:

My 2017 New Year’s Resolutions

Pay off Debt

This one is obvious.  Since I’m so close to paying off that card, I might as well add it to the list.

Say No to New

This one is a little more interesting.  I’ve been thinking a lot about our planet and how much space we take up on it.  When new products are made and purchased the old ones have to go somewhere, and many times this somewhere is landfills.

I thought to reduce this somewhat in two ways.  First, avoid buying anything unless I really, really need/want it.  This way I have less stuff that occupies valuable space.

The second way is to only buy stuff second hand if possible.  This means searching out items at thrift stores, yard sales, consignment shops, antique stores, etc.  The bonus for this is that I will save money and may end up with more interesting stuff.  Thrift stores and antique shops are full of fun stuff.

Organize and Plan

I’ve been thinking that so much of the stress in my life is somewhat linked to a failure to plan things out and organize them.  True I’m good at making to-do lists for crafts and stuff, but I think I need to go a bit further than that. I’ve got a lot of stuff in my life to juggle around, and as I get older I will probably gain more to juggle.

So I’m starting out in search of a system that works for me to plan out everything in my life.  From blog posts to birthdays, work schedules to workouts.  I intend to keep it all in order so I don’t end up pulling my hair out toward the end of each week.

And that’s it.  I’m keeping the resolutions short and sweet this year.  Doing too many makes it too overwhelming, just failure waiting to happen.

What about you?  Got any goals for this year?  Let’s work on them together!

Financial Tips from a Surprising Source

Financial Tips from a Surprising Source

Need a little help saving for something special?  I may be able to help.  Over on my doll blog, I wrote a Doll Owner’s Corner post about saving up for a ball jointed doll.  You know, those adorable but incredibly pricey dolls I have been making clothes for the last few months.

Anyway, the post started out as being about dolls, but kind of went out of control.  I think there is some useful information about budgeting and saving for the things that matter to you, whether it’s a fun wish list item or something bigger.

Let me know if it was helpful for you.

The Power of Thank You

The Power of Thank YouConfession time:  I’m not sure if it is noticeable to those who read my blogs, but it is fairly noticeable to those who know me in real life.  To some more so than others.

I am shy.

Extremely shy at times.  Attempting to talk to someone I don’t know can be incredibly intimidating, even terrifying at times.  Strange since I work in retail.  But there is a huge difference between initiating conversation with someone I just met and offering to help someone find something in a store, at least in my head there is thankfully.

Anyway, because of this one little problem, there is one thing about the blogging world I’ve always had a bit of trouble with, leaving comments.  I will go read a fantastic blog post that made me laugh, cry, inspired me, etc.  Above all it’s extraordinary.  The kind of post you naturally share on every single social media network known to man.  But the top way to show some love for such a glorious masterpiece of blog writing?

Noooooooo!  Anything but that!  What in the world do I possibly write in this darn comment box?!  How do I put my thoughts and feelings into actual concrete words and sentences?!  Ahhhh!

Yes that is actually the kind of thing that’s goes through my head most of the time.  Sometimes it’s easier.  I just mention the first thing that pops in my head like an idea about something to add to the project/recipe I just read about.

But most of the time I’m stuck.  What message can I send to this blogger to show my appreciation for their work, that doesn’t sound like I’m simply trying to spam them with links to my own blog.  Yes, that’s another fear of mine.

I realized something recently.  That kind of thing that you think and wonder “why didn’t I think of this before?!”  The whole point is to show appreciation.  Off-line I think it’s super important to show your appreciation for others, so I frequently do so with one simple little phrase.

Thank you

When someone says something nice to me, or holds a door for me, or anything else big or small.  I say thank you because again it is important to show your appreciation, even for little things or especially for little things.  And saying thank you is the easiest way to do so.  So easy how can you not say it?

So maybe instead of worrying about what to say online to people when leaving comments, it’s best to just keep it simple.

Just say thank you.

Thank you for sharing this photo that made me laugh.  Thank you for telling this story that inspired me.  Thank you for showing me how to do/make something that I really needed.  Thank you for taking the time to visit.  Because that’s what really matters.

Thank you for reading this, it makes me smile. :)

My Favorite Things: Hefty Slider Bags

The latest favorite things to showcase is probably one of the strangest ones, but trust me, it’s fantastic.

My Favorite Things: Hefty Slider Bags

Baggies.  Hefty Slider bags to be exact.

I usually get them on sale with coupons, and I stock up.  I find little baggies to be fantastic around the house, especially these ones.  It’s because that little slider thing makes them open and close quickly making them easy to use, plus they are very sturdy for plastic baggies which makes them easy to reuse.  And I do just that a lot.

Using Slider Bags for Craft Supplies

My main use for them is storing craft materials.  I can sort beads, ribbons, findings, etc. and I can even use them temporarily to corral materials needed for projects in progress depending on the size of the baggie I use.  I also use them for non-crafty organizing and on sometimes, occasionally I actually use these bags for food.

Overall I find them brilliant to use, but not to say that I’m totally loyal to this brand.  I found a similar store brand version at CVS sometime ago.  Since it was on sale, I decided to try them out.  They have the same little slider thing and seem to be just as sturdy.  Let’s just see how they work in the long run.

Blogging: What’s the Point?

Blogging: What's the Point?Warning:  Much ranting ahead.

I’ve seen articles posted on various blogs with tips on how to do this and that with your blog to make it better.  Adding/using widgets, customizing the appearance, tracking stats, monetizing, etc.  And don’t forget about promoting your blog using Twitter, Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, Buffer, YouTube, [insert latest social media here].  Annoyingly many of these articles seem to claim that when it comes to blog hosting, Wordpress is the only way to go.  Eye roll.  To quote one blog “if you aren’t already using Wordpress, you need to be”.  This part I always groan at because to me it matters less where you host your blog and more how you use it.

This can be explained in two parts.  First, in the available features of the site you choose.  I’ve heard much praise on the features available to wordpress users and how well they can fully customize their blogs.  These are only great if you actually use them.  Example, I’ve seen blogs that look wonderful, super well designed.  Guess what?  They’re on blogger.  On the other hand I’ve seen blogs with colors and layouts that scream “default”.  Blogger again?  Nope, Wordpress.  Either site works well as long as you choose what works for you and put in the effort to make your blog the way you want.

Now the second part gets us closer to my main point, using your blog.  I recently visited another wonderful looking blog.  Everything about it was perfect except for one thing, it was dead silent.  There might as well have been cobwebs hanging around from the lack of activity from the blog owner, not that I really should talk much about inactivity.  Of course I usually avoid going 2+ years without updating.  Meanwhile I know of another blog with a comparatively basic look to it, not to mention a color scheme that I personally wouldn’t go for in a million years.  It is alive with activity from both the author and her readers.  Plenty of posts as well as comments.

Yes, we have finally gotten to my point.  The point?  Blogging isn’t about pretty banners and backgrounds or having a “professional” looking site.  It’s isn’t about following others via every social media site under the sun hoping some of them will follow back.  It’s about sharing yourself with others.  What did you do this week that made you happy?  Share it.  What did you make yourself that you’re proud of?  Share it.  What do you like to do that you think others might like too?  Share it.  What can you teach others to do right now?  What has been on you mind that is just screaming to get out?  What do you want to say that will take more than a photo or 50 characters? Share it!  Share it with others and let them share back

This is why I continue to blog, even to come back to my blog after much time away.  So I can Share.  Look forward to more sharing.

Christmas At Last?

This post may contain affiliate links, please check out my disclosures page for more info. Thanks!

Now I know this post is a little late (nearly 7 months!!), but better late than never.  And what better way to take our minds off the heat of summer than by browsing through something a little more wintery, right?

As I said in my last post, oh so long ago, I decided to make all Christmas presents and such only from materials I had on hand at the time, spending absolutely no money.  It worked, a little too well.

The fact is that my craft stash was and probably still is fairly well stocked, it just makes things too easy.  I would love to say that this has inspired me greatly and that I haven’t bought any new supplies since December in order to further use up my stash and work my creative muscles, but I can’t since I have only realized all this now. Several months later.

But enough of this, time for the crafts.

First off, the ornaments.  Every year, for who knows how many years, I always make some sort of ornaments.  Nothing says holiday cheer like a homemade ornament, so last Christmas was no exception.  I actually made two sets of ornaments.  Both made from Christmas-y print fabrics I got for free from church along with some ribbons and cords.

Fabric Yo-Yo Christmas Ornments with Bells
This first set was similar to the ones from the previous year(see Yo-Yos and Buttons) except for these I added little bows and jingle bells.

The second set of ornaments were a bit different.  I learned how to make little kanzashi flowers and thought they would be perfect for ornaments.  They are just as fun and easy to make as the yo-yos, but one difference.  For yo-yo ornaments I only need to make two yo-yos for each one, but for the kanzashi ornaments I need to make six petals to form one.

kanzashi petals sewn
It came to making about 138 of these little folded and sewn petals…

Kanzashi Christmas Ornaments
…To make these 23 finished ornaments.

They were well received though most of the recipients thought they were poinsettias.  That actually makes them perfect for Christmas.

Dalmation and Fire Truck Blanket
Remember the cute baby blankets and such I made for my friends (See Sewing for Baby)?  A certain little boy thought the cute fabric would be perfect for a blanket for him.  And since I had plenty left over, he got this larger size blanket for Christmas.

Pretty Floral Print Zippered Pouch
For a certain little girl, I made this pretty pouch for her to keep things like lip balm.  It’s made from scraps from the two dresses I made earlier last year (see Time for Some Catching Up).

It came out better than I thought it would, mainly because of the zipper.  Zippers still are a total pain for me, but thankfully I’ve improved with them over the years enough so they aren’t something to be feared.  I guess that’s saying something.

Faux Fur Collar
I’m particularly proud of this one, a vintage style collar.  It’s made from scraps leftover from the teddy bear and jacket I made along with that baby blanket.

I kind of eyeballed the pattern a little, managed to luck out.  I actually have been wanting to make one for myself since I still have enough fabric leftover, just not right now.  It hit 111 degrees the other day.

Maybe this Christmas.

Vintage Style Button Hair Clip
To go along with the collar, I made this pretty hair clip.  It’s made similarly to the broaches I made in my tutorial years ago (see Button Broach: A Tutorial).

It’s actually very fitting since I bought the fan shaped button with the buttons I used then.  I just hadn’t found a use for it.  The only difference is I added the chocolate brown bow on the front…

Vintage Style Button Hair Clip backside
…And glued a clip instead of a pin back on the back.  That and my gluing is probably a lot neater looking, thankfully.  I guess it means I’ve improved since then.

Lined Dice Bag
Here’s something not so vintage looking but still unique.  It’s a dice bag and it’s fully lined.  I used some fabric remnants I got in a baggie from a thrift store some time ago.

I meant to use them for some previous projects but never did sadly.  The red pinstripes give the bag a sophisticated grown-up look, however the pattern on the lining has a different effect.  I won’t reveal what that is, that is strictly for the owner’s enjoyment.

Cute Plaid Ruffled Top and Skirt
Now a little something for myself.  I got a great deal on some of this cute plaid material from a thrift store (see Bagging It On Black Friday), and I thought it would be perfect for something to wear for the holiday season as well as year round.

I couldn’t decide to make a dress or a skirt so I sort of did both.  I made a skirt and matching top, so I can wear them together for a “dress” look or just skirt or top with other pieces.  So far I’ve done just that almost every month since December. Very versatile indeed.

So now Christmas is done, but I’ve still got several months to catch y’all up on.  So much has happened with so much stuff sewn. It’ll have to be covered in several posts.

Look forward to it!

My Favorite Things: eBooks

It’s has been awhile since I’ve done one of these posts, I guess I kind of forgotEmbarrassed smile

Something I have almost always enjoyed doing is reading.  I say almost because I’m sure I probably didn’t feel too enthusiastic about it when I was just a little kid learning how to read, though I don’t actually remember.  Anyway, I also enjoy using my netbook and downloading all the new goodies I find.  So naturally one of my favorite things are…

ebooks

…eBooks!

Most the eBooks I have I downloaded from Gutenberg (for free!), but I have found them in so many different places.  Some include:

  • Internet Archive—It’s basically like an online library, you can find tons of free eBooks, videos, etc.
  • Open Library—It’s similar to Internet Archive, except not all the books are free, though many of them can be “checked out” just like a regular library.  And there’s plenty of classic books to download for free.
  • Scribd—this one blends eBooks and social media together.  You can read and download tons of books and share ones you’ve written.
  • CNET—this is actually a place to find software of all kinds including eBooks and eBook readers.  Most of the software is free or free to try.
  • Greater Phoenix Digital Library—this is a local resource for me.  Anyone with a library card for one of 10 different public libraries in the Phoenix Metropolitan area can log in and check out eBooks and videos there.  For those outside the area, check with your local library for similar programs.

Now please excuse me, I’m in the middle of re-reading Little Women.  Happy reading!

My Favorite Things: Conditioner

DSCI2964 (348x800)

Specifically, one of my favorite things is Alberto V05 conditioner, their shampoo isn’t too bad either.  What’s not to love?  They have so many different varieties with different scents and colors to choose from.  I am currently using their Herbal Escapes Free Me Freesia, but my favorites are their Moisture Milks Berries and Cream and Peaches and Cream.  They smell wonderful and are perfect for dry hair.

Another thing that’s great is the price.  You’re looking at $1 or less for a 15 oz. bottle of conditioner.  I frequently see it go on sale at CVS for 77 cents a bottle, usually with a limit of 10 bottles.  A couple of times I’ve seen the price drop as low as 66 cents, also at CVS pharmacy.  I tend to wait for those sales and stock up.  Why not? They are non-perishables that are fairly easy to store.  And conditioner is a good thing to have on hand.

Good uses for conditioner:

  • Shaving
  • Detangling doll hair
  • Detangling people hair
  • Fabric softener, mix it with water and vinegar first.
  • Removing makeup
  • Preventing rust
  • Dealing with head lice Surprised smile

Want more?  Check this list of ideas.

How about you?  What’s your favorite conditioner?  Know any other uses for it?

My Favorite Things: Pigeons

You read that title correctly.  One of my favorite animals are…

Pigeons

…Pigeons.

Yep, I actually like “rats with wings”.  What is it about them?  First off is their walk, I guess I have a thing for birds that walk or strut instead of hop.  It’s one of the reasons I also like chickens.  I also think they are pretty birds.  Just take a look at those iridescent feathers on that male in the photo.  And I love the ones with white/brown feathers, though people usually call those one “doves”.  Technically the terms dove and pigeon refer to the same animal.  True they aren’t necessarily the smartest birds I know.  I once saw a pair of pigeons attempt to outrun a bus.  Luckily for them the driver had a heart.  Still, I think they are great birds and such fun to watch.

My Favorite Things: Knee Socks

If you happen to run into me on the street, be it winter or even in summer, you will look down and see these…

DSCI2924

Knee socks.

That blue pair in the photo? I have at least two pairs.  I also have several others that are white, cream, black, dark blue, etc.  Most of my socks I got at Wal-Mart and 99 Cents Only Store. Wal-Mart usually sells them for about $2 and then clearances them about this time of year.  99 Cents Only Store socks are always $1 and I frequently see them for sale throughout the whole year. The problem is their socks are prone to pilling, wash very gently.  I wear my knee socks almost everyday of the week, and in all weather.  I just think they are so cute, and very useful.  On cold days they obviously keep my legs warm.  And sunny days they actually help protect my legs from the effects of the sun, something many people don’t seem to think about much.  I remember reading somewhere that the back of the leg at the calf is a common place for skin cancer to appear in women.  If I remember the source I’ll post it.  The reasoning is that that area does get a lot of exposure to the suns rays, just like your nose, cheeks, and shoulders.  However, most people aren’t as careful about applying sunscreen there, same goes for the neck and chest area which definitely show the effects of sun, but that’s going way off topic.  The point is that wearing knee socks year-round make sense, plus it’s still fun.

When Life Happens, or Why I’ve Been So Quiet

redrose-gfairySo I haven’t exactly blogged much in the last few months.  I do have a reason for this, something that I’ve been rather quiet about offline and completely silent online.  How should I explain?

Once upon a time, toward the end of last October, I got home from an appointment only to have my sister inform me that we received an eviction noticed.  The notice didn’t actually give a reason as to why they wanted us out, which of course was strange.  What was even stranger was when they refused to accept our rent payment for November, but then we got a court summons for eviction due to “non-payment of rent”.  We moved out in December and my family sort of split in different directions, that includes Midnight.  Yes, I had to give up my beloved kitty.  She’s alright though, she’s living with a friend of a friend of a friend.  Some people call him “the cat whisper”, Midnight totally loves him.  I stayed with friends for a while and have been staying in motels with my mother and brother for the last couple of months.  Some people might use the word “homeless” to describe the current situation.  I’m not sure about that, but I don’t like to focus on that for too long.

The main reasons I have been so silent here?  First off, I just wasn’t really ready to talk about all of this much let alone blog about it.  Second, it was pretty much the only thing I had to blog about.  We had to put most of our belongings in storage, that includes all my craft supplies.  So I have not been able to make anything since December, oh the horror!  Plus the whole losing the last place I called home really does put me in the mood to blog about other happy things, not!  So here’s the equation:

No crafty fun to blog about + big event that I couldn’t speak of + sadness

dead, silent blog

They say when things don’t go quite right, it’s good to stay positive right?  So, in the name of optimism I have come up with two new goals.  One is to try to appreciate the little things in my life.  So every week I will blog about something that brings a smile to my face on a regular basis.  Watch for this later this week.  The second is pay back.  I mean giving back, to those online who support me.  Explanation?  Whenever someone leaves a comment here or on my other blog, re-tweets me on twitter, follows me on pinterest, etc. I receive an email.  I have never deleted any of these emails because each one has made me so happy.  I thought why not return the favor.  So from now on whenever I receive one of these emails I will try my best to do something in return, be it leaving a comment, re-pinning pins, or following blogs and such.  I am starting retroactively, meaning I am going through all my old emails and spending a few moments each day showing some love to these individuals who gave me some love over the past few years.  Better get to it, I’ve got a lot to do now.Smile

Gone! And a Trip

Okay first off, I did finish my next project and I did say I would post it today.  There is just one tiny little problem.  My camera.  It. Is. Gone.  I looked everywhere I could possibly think of, but it is still missing.  What the heck.  No camera, no cute picture of my finished project.:(
To make up for it, here are some photos from a when I took my niece to the zoo.  Luckily I got them off the camera before it mysteriously disappeared.
Polaroid
One of the elephants enjoying the misting thingies.  It was about 106 degrees that day which explains why this elephant was ignoring the kids throwing carrots on the other side of the habitat.
Polaroid
This jaguar looked really hot and bored.  Poor thing.
Polaroid
I forgot what this bird is called, but it’s really pretty.
Polaroid
I had never seen more pelicans.  They showed up in the oddest places.  This one was floating in the pond next to another one that was full of all these small friendly looking turtles.  I discovered why they looked so friendly when I reached my hand to one and it tried to eat my finger.
Polaroid
Speaking of shelled reptiles, we were there just in time to watch these tortoises eat lunch.
Polaroid
I spotted this bunny nearby.  Yep, that’s tortoise food it’s munching on.
Polaroid
This is the closest we got to this stork.
Polaroid
I can’t remember what these are called, but they sure are cute.
Polaroid
These turkeys were near the petting zoo.  The male one didn’t seem too happy to see us, but the female one really showed her displeasure.  She pecked a little girl nearby.
Polaroid
This goat was waiting patiently to go back inside.  His home was being cleaned.
Polaroid
Here’s his friend.  Great smile for a goat.
Polaroid
I caught this bald eagle in the act.  Just kidding, he was just stretching out his wings.
Polaroid
Awww, how cute.
Polaroid
It’s a black swan, I didn’t even know they existed.
Polaroid
The sign said these were “warty pigs”.  The wart hogs were are the farther side of the park.  We would have visited them, but it was too far to go in the heat.
Polaroid
Here’s a pair of emus.  What is the plural form of “emu”?
Polaroid
Of course we had to check out the prairie dogs.  This was just before we got stopped by the lady at the lost and found.  My niece had left her bag on a bench and when we went back for it, it was gone.  We filed a report and about 20 minutes later someone had turned it in, so the lady there came to find us.  My guess is that whoever found it on the bench tried to immediately take it to the lost and found place and couldn’t find it.  We probably got there first.
Polaroid
Anyway, near the prairies dogs was this pair of mountain lions.  They were really hard to spot.  They were is a large crack in the rocks, just escaping the heat and catching some ZZZZs.
Polaroid
Just got to love the flamingoes.  My niece didn’t believe me when I told her because they looked white.  If I remember correctly, flamingoes are pink because of a reaction to a sort of algae that they eat.  I guess that stuff doesn’t grow well in Arizona or something.
