Saturday Shuffle Blog Hop #223

Saturday Shuffle Blog Hop #223

It’s Saturday!!  Time for another blog hop.

But first, a special announcement.

I’m sad to say that this will be the last Saturday Shuffle blog hop.  Some of you may have noticed my blogs have been really quiet lately except for the blog hop which I’ve kept going all these months because I wanted to so, so much.  But, I’ve realised there are many other things in my life right now that need to be higher priority and something had to give.

It’s been fun though for me, and I hope this blog hop has been as much fun for all of you too.  I also hope someday things will change in my life enough for me to come back to regular blogging and possibly start up this blog hop once again.

Anyway, since it is the last week, let’s make it the best one!

Here’s the deal:

  • Keep all links family friendly.
  • It helps to follow me or leave a nice happy comment, but only if you want.
  • Link whatever you want and as much as you want.
  • Older links are welcome, so are giveaways and blog hops, etc.
  • Please grab my button and stick it somewhere, at the very least it will make it easier for you to come back. ---->
  • My favorite links will be pinned to the Official Saturday Shuffle Pinterest Board.

pin board

I have set up a blog hop directory to showcase blog hops that I personally recommend.  Feel free to check them out.

Now get to it and have fun! :)

What I Did On My Blogging Break

My little break from this blog has officially ended. Yay!

To get things going, I want to share with you all what kinds of things I did while “away”.

What I Did on My Blogging Break

What I Did on My Blogging Break

  • Still kept the blog hop going.  Thanks to all of you who attend regularly. :)
  • Sorted through my closet, got rid of a bunch of stuff in the pile of junk I referred to as “mending”.
  • Started an actual mending box, with notes pinned to the pieces describing what needs to be fixed.
  • Took an inventory of my stash of toothpaste, lotion, laundry soap, etc..
  • Did some thrift shopping, didn’t get many photos. :(
  • Did some online shopping, got tons of photos. :)
  • Got a new phone.  It’s got super long battery life, I’ll share more later.
  • Downloaded all the apps under the sun.  Including Homescapes.
  • Got addicted to Homescapes.
  • Finally bought a copy of Howl’s Moving Castle on DVD.  One of the best animated movies ever.
  • Finally hung up the cute bathroom rack I bought ages ago.
  • Got foaming pump bottles from Amazon.  Just fill about 1/4 with your product of choice, fill the rest of the way with water, screw on the top, and shake.  Then you have your own diy foaming soap, shampoo, body wash, etc.
  • Went to the Arizona Matsuri, a festival for Japan.  I will post a video soon.
  • Re-read most of my old, old posts for this blog as well as the other two (ah, memories).  Sorted out ones that need updating (pretty much all of them!).
  • Did some other work for the blogs.  Updating pages, fiddling with ads, etc.
  • Reorganized my photos and video clips to make it easier to make my videos and blog posts. :)
  • Fully drafted and planned my newest craft project list.  It will be up tomorrow!
  • Sleep!

And that’s mostly it.  As mentioned I will be sharing more about some of these things in the future.

Look forward to it. :)

Something to Do While It’s Quiet

I just wanted to warn you that it’s going to be a little quiet here for the next month or so.  I’m taking a little break from updating this blog to work on a few other things.

But just in case you get a little bored, here’s a few suggestions.

Stuff to check out like my ball jointed doll blog and maze blog..

If you haven’t already done so by now, try checking out my doll blog, From a Doll’s Eyes.  It’s mostly about ball jointed dolls and written mainly from the point of the view of my first doll, Hikaru.  If you like dolls in general, tutorials, cute photos and amusing stories, you will love it.

Stuff to check out like my maze blog and doll blog.

You can also check out my maze blog, Simply Mazes.  It’s been a little quiet on there, but I’m trying to get it rolling again with a new maze at least every other week.  Feel free to browse all the mazes available.  These particular mazes may prove useful in the next month (hint: Valentines’ Day).

Find Me on Pinterest

For a bit more variety, try visiting me on Pinterest.  I frequently pin tons of stuff I find like funny videos, recipes, doll stuff, holiday stuff, clothing tutorials, and more.  If you prefer, I also share stuff on Twitter and Google+.

I hope you enjoy all I have to offer and I shall return with more.  Look forward to it.

A Sewing Machine Review, Because…

The bad news is that my beloved sewing machine of eight years died on me during one of my projects.  :(

The good news is…

Bought a sewing machine from Overstock.com

I got a new one!

I bought it from Overstock.com, which is where I got the old one too.  The great thing is that it’s a model with more features and stuff, but a smaller price.  They were having a deal on it that made it about $10 less than my old sewing machine.

And I got free shipping, shipping that took longer than normal though.  It took two weeks from when I ordered it to receive my package.  I think this was just bad luck because it normally only takes the usual 3-5 business days.

Unboxing a refurbished Brother sewing machine.

I bought a refurbished Brother JX2517 sewing machine, on sale for $49.99.  Brother is the same company that made my old machine, and my mother’s sewing machine, and my sister’s sewing machine, etc.  Yep, we have a lot of their machines running around here.

It’s been my experience that Brother sells a wide variety of sewing machines that are quite affordable (some more so than others), well built, easy to run and last a good long while.  Which is why I love them. :)

Just got a Brother JX2517 sewing machine.

Anyway, here is my new sewing machine!  Isn’t it pretty?

As you can see, it comes with an instruction book, a DVD, the foot peddle and plug…

Sewing machine accessories.

…and some accessories!

Sewing machine accessories.

Extra bobbins, extra needles, zipper foot, a buttonhole tool, etc.  Plenty to get you going.

The stitch settings on a Brother JX2517 sewing machine.

My old machine was a very basic model and didn’t have many built in stitches at all, but this one has several.  I’ve already tried out a few of them, with good results.  The instruction booklet has a list of all the stitches and their use, very helpful.

What I wasn’t expecting was the deal with the bobbin, it’s a top loader.  I had never used one before, but thankfully, I found it really simple.  The instuctions and markings on the machine made it easy.

Both threading and running this sewing machine is a breeze.  It runs really smoothly and seems quieter than my old machine too which is a real plus.  I find I do my best sewing at night and a quieter machine is less likely to wake people up.

But, speaking of my old sewing machine…

My poor old sewing machine, lasted about nine years.

Here is the poor thing. :(

It’s a Brother LS-30.  As I’ve mentioned before, it’s an extremely basic machine.  Good for a beginner or for someone who does very minimal sewing.  Though it can work wonders in the right hands, I made this dress with it among many others.

It served me well for over eight years, but it’s time to go.  I will probably donate it or something.  Hopefully somebody else can still get some use from it if they can repair it or just use it for parts.

Saying goodbye to the old sewing machine and hello to the new one.

Goodbye old friend.  You were very useful to me until the very end.

Super Cute Shopping! AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening

It would come as no surprise to many that I like shopping at Asian supermarkets.  Love them actually.  Yesterday one of my favorite stores, Mekong Supermarket had the grand opening of their new sister store, the AZ International Marketplace.  Yay!

Super Cute Shopping! AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening

I had heard about it weeks before hand from flyers at Mekong and checked out the Facebook page for the new store.  It was like every type of ethic grocery store combined into one ultimate super store.  Yep, I was definitely going.

Super Cute Shopping! AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening

They were giving out free gift certificates for the first 500 people, so of course I tried to get there super early.  Like 6 am early.  There was no one there except for a nice elderly woman whom I didn’t see at first because she had gone to find a restroom.

Super Cute Shopping! AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening

I got to see what was left of the sunrise over the parking lot.  The place was decorated with little flags of several different countries.

Super Cute Shopping! AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening

I was there to watch them set up the balloon arch in front of the doorway.

Super Cute Shopping! AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening

And to watch them later set up for the opening ceremony, I even got to help them set up the table cloth.

On the table here is a plate of exactly 10 pieces of fruit, an urn full of rice, a plate of pork buns, and several large candles and torches to be lit up during the ceremony.

Super Cute Shopping! AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening

Here they have the candles going.  Behind the table you can see the head of the whole roasted pig, I spared you the view of the rest of it.

Dragon Dance at AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening

I was the second person in the store, and by the time I got my gift certificate and my raffle tickets the fireworks display was over. :(

I did of course get to see the dragon dance inside the store with drums to accompany them.

AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening Sale Flyer

Once inside, I didn’t really get anymore photos because I was too busy squealing at the cute stuff and all the great deals.  Here the sale flyer.  At the top it says you get 10% everything that isn’t already on sale, I think that’s what brought most people in to the store.

AZ International Marketplace Grand Opening Sale Flyer

Funny thing is that Mekong Supermarket had the same deal for their grand opening, but never actually got rid of it. Even now, years later you still get 10% normal priced items.  So I’m hoping since this is the sister store, that they will do the same thing.

We were there all day, not entirely by choice though.  The sales and such brought lots of people in and sent them straight to the registers to check out with fully filled shopping carts.  This lead to hour plus waiting times just to check out.  When I got home all I wanted to do was sleep.

What I Bought at AZ International Marketplace

Well, sleep and gush over what I bought, want to see?

Cute Pink Shopping Haul

Behold!

Cute Bear Wastebasket

First up is this cute wastebasket.  It was advertised as $3.58, and I somehow couldn’t resist something so adorable and actually useful.

Pretty Flower Wastebasket

The lid is shaped like a bear’s head but the rest has this pretty flower design that kind of clashes with the bear.  I’d be tempted to just use it without the bear lid, but I think it’s more useful with a lid.  Plus it is somewhat amusing to me.

Cute Pink Plastic Drawers

I found this cute set of plastic drawers with the office supplies, normal price is about $5.  They are probably meant for things like pens and stuff, but I could easily use them for storing accessories or craft supplies.  Like the craft supplies I still need to sort through. :|

Pretty Pink Plastic Drawers

What really sold me on this was the soft pink color and cute plastic bow shaped drawer pulls.  They also come in other pretty colors too. :)

Pink Bento Box

Speaking of cute pink things, I also got this pink bento box.  They had square-ish shaped ones like this and round ones in pink, blue, or green on sale for $2.99.

There is a third piece inside that comes out to form two separate compartments for food, and yes it does come with a spoon.  This was part of a serious discussion I had with another shopper who was purchasing one as well.

Super Cute Pink Cup

Another serious discussion was where I found this adorable pink cup.  It was actually with the bathroom accessories.  I think it’s intended to use when brushing your teeth to rinse and maybe to keep your toothbrush afterwards.

It was about $1.50 regular price and it says “Dream, Love makes the world go round”.  I love it when cute things from Asian countries have little English phrases on them like that, especially when the English isn’t very well translated.

Pink Hanging Laundry Drying Rack

The most useful pink item I got?  A hanging laundry drying rack thing.  I already had three of these and use them almost constantly.

Air drying is better for clothes and for the wallet as well as the environment.  Plus you can hang a surprising variety of items on these things.  Sock, undies, bras, tank tops, knit shorts, t-shirts, small kids stuff, etc.  Naturally when hanging larger items you need to use more than one clip.

Close up of pink clips on laundry rack

Anyway, this rack was about $2.50 normal price and came in other shapes as well.

What really sold me on this one was the cute heart shaped clips.  I’ve had problems in the past with these racks with the clips breaking off, but still being useful as clips for household stuff.  So I think having cute sturdy looking clips is a good thing to look for with drying racks.

Super Cute Kawaii Pink Comb

And the cute pink parade ends with this adorable comb.  They had several different colors and patterns, all of them were 89 cents each normal price.

I’m not sure if I actually want to use it for my hair or just hang it on the wall and admire it.  At the very least, I want to save the packaging to decorate things.  Decoupage anyone?

Since this place is a grocery store, I had to actually buy something to eat.  So I bought…

Canned Quail Eggs

…Quail eggs?

I love them, they taste really good if you season them and dump them in pasta dishes, stir-fries, etc.  And I’ve found that it’s actually cheaper and easier to buy them canned instead of fresh.  You get more than twice as many eggs for about the same price and they are already hard-boiled and peeled for you.

This is one of my favorite brands of canned quail eggs (mostly because of price, about $2.20), but the last few times I went to Mekong Supermarket they were sold out.  Imagine how happy I was when I found them at AZ International Marketplace.  So I immediately grabbed two cans and wandered off.

Sample of Parle-G Original Gluco Biscuits

Along with the great assortment of foods to buy, there were plenty of samples available, like these biscuits that were handed out at the door on the way out.  I also got to sample various cheeses, seasoned fruit, and got little bags of Takis chips.  I would have gotten a picture of those too, but I ate them all.

My New Sunglasses

While I was there I noticed a display for sunglasses, specifically I noticed the 40% off sign for the sunglasses.  I really had been in desperate need for a new pair (Summer in Arizona, enough said), so why not take a peek.

The normal price for this pair was about $10 with many other pairs for about $8.  With the sale I only paid $7, not too bad I think.

Pretty Fans

The last thing I got were these fans.  They are similar to a fan I bought at SAS last summer that was a godsend.  They were the same price too, about $1.99 normal price and tons to choose from.  The white one is for me, and I have other ideas for the other two.

Close Up of Pretty Fans

These fans, like much of what I brought are made in China.  I noticed and found it rather interesting that on the red fan this fact was incorporated into the design.

Overall, I had a great though exhausting time, but the fun isn’t over yet.  If you couldn’t make the grand opening, this Saturday and Sunday, April 23-24th, AZ International Marketplace will continue their celebration from noon to 5 pm.  They will have a BBQ and music, bounce house, raffles, etc. and of course sales.

So another chance to enjoy this new store.  And if you aren’t local, why not check out what you have in your area.  Got any great ethic grocery stores or restaurants you love?  Please share. :)

Special Announcement or What to Expect

What to ExpectFirst off, this week’s Five a Week craft didn’t get posted or even completed because I got a little too caught up with another project I’m taking up.  As soon as that’s all finish I’ll post it, trust me it will be worth the wait.

Work is getting busier than ever, plus I want to spend a little more time focusing on that special project as well as all the projects on my craft list.  This will mean that it will be a bit quiet around here for a while.  I will still be doing the Saturday Shuffle blog party each week though.  It’s just too much fun not to do.  And I will probably do a few things about Halloween, it will be here before you know it, can’t wait!

Just know I’m still around and I will be back shortly to share with you all.  Look forward to it.

Time for Some Catching Up

Well hello, I thought it was about time to let you all know what I've been up to these past few, or shall I say many months.

For starters, I did start working at a new place last December.  I totally love it there, my coworkers are great and our customers are super nice to me.  Plus I get an employee discount that has really helped me save money especially when used with coupons. Did I mentioned I have discovered the joys of couponing?  More on that lator. Another change is that my family moved into a new apartment last spring.  It is definitely an improvement from before (see When Life Happens, or Why I've Been So Quiet).

As for sewing, I've mainly done a lot of mending and taking things in because I've lost some weight.  That doesn't mean I haven't done anything crafty though.

Here is the dress I made for Easter.  Lovely isn't it?  I found the fabric on clearance at Walmart.  So glad they started selling fabric again.  I loved it so much I actually went back to buy a few more yards of the same fabric.  Anyways, it has puffed sleeves, criss-crossing ribbons at the neck, a wide ribbon sash, and it's trimmed with eyelet lace and braided trim.  All materials except for fabric came from SAS in Tempe, another great place for fabric by the way.

For accessories (of course there's accessories) I made a flower headband and a purse.  The headband was made with wire stem rosesbuds.  All I had to do was wrap each stem around a blank headband one by one. I then wrapped and covered the rest of the headband with matching ribbon.  I only burnt myself with the glue gun 2 times. :)

The purse is just a simple square shape with a flap added.  The strap is made from ribbon twisted into a cord.  A little bit of braid and a bow was all it needed to look cute.

Here's photo of the dress worn, fits well don't you think?

Now I did mention I bought more of the fabric, so guess what I did with it.

I made another dress of course.  I find it beneficial to make multiple dresses/skirts when I have enough fabric because then I have more things to go with the accessories.  This dress I wore to Phoenix Comicon last July.  It features ribbon roses near the straps.  After many attempts I finally figured out how to make them.  If I get better at it I might make a tutorial.  I'm afraid I never got a picture of it but, in addition to this dress I made a matching tote bag that looks similar to the purse. I thought it would be handy to have something larger to carry things like programs and souvenirs. It really came in handy.

Finally I should mention that two of my dearest friends are expecting their first child.  It's a boy and he's due next month, super exciting. I should show all the stuff I made for him, but I'll leave that for another post, or two.  Look forward to it.

Time For a Change

Well it has been a while since the last time I posted anything here. I'm not going to try to make any excuses, what's the point of that anyway. Time to start things off fresh. That means some changes around here. One in particular, my name. I'm changing the name of this blog. After much thinking, I've realized that my style and personality have changed over the years. So much so that Freaky Keen just doesn't feel right to me anymore. So what's the new name going to be?

I think it has a nice ring to it, plus I think it fits me better.

Time to Catch Up

alarm clock vintage image graphicsfairy7bExcept for my blog hop, it has been pretty quiet here.  Okay it’s been totally dead.  I thought I’d take the time to update a little, you know, clear away some cobwebs.

First off, after months of trying and trying I finally got a job.  Yay!  I start next Monday.  I will be working at a medical manufacturing facility.  It should be super fun, I get to wear goggles and a lab coat.  And hopefully it means I won’t have to stay in motels much longer, another plus.

I can’t remember if I mentioned this here or just on twitter, but I am on Google+ and have been there for quite some time now.  So I have been regularly sharing things, mostly stuff I posted on pinterest, random craft tutorials, and cute animal pics.  I’m a sucker for those.

As quiet as it has been here, it has been even more so I my maze blog up until last week when I finally posted a new maze.  I will try to post a little more regularly from now on.  Keyword, try.

I know I haven’t mentioned this yet, but I am now on tumblr of all places. I find it rather fascinating.  It’s kind of like twitter but without the character limit and more customization.  Plus not only can I post just about anything, I can let people submit things for me to post and even ask me questions.  Feel free to ask me pretty much anything, I have an odd habit of answering almost every question asked of me anyway, even the awkward ones.

And last but not least, I finally got back on track with my crafting.  Yep, another pink pants project is coming up (see A Challenge!!), I’ll probably post it Thursday so look forward to it.

Good Bye Angel

Some of you may have heard from my twitter account that I had to take one of the cats to the vet yesterday.   It was Angel, he was completely blocked and in critical condition.  He had to be move from the clinic to a 24 hour emergency center.  It was from there that I got a call last night at about 10:00 pm.  Angel had gone into cardiac arrest.  It was a shock for us as well as the doctors, that’s not exactly the sort of thing that happens with urinary obstructions in cats.  In case it isn’t already obvious, Angel didn’t make it.  It’s hard to describe how I’ve been feeling about all of this.  Shock, fear, sadness, guilt, the list goes on and on.  All the what if scenarios keep on running through my mind.  If only I had done this, if only I had noticed that, etc.  My niece and nephew have been taking it fairly well, sort of.  My nephew was told that we “lost” Angel and misunderstood.  He now thinks Angel is just somewhere outside.  My niece gets it.  She has lots of questions too, and she now knows what epinephrine is and what cardiac arrest means.  Overall, I guess we are just hanging in there.  All we need is time.

Polaroid

Rest well Angel.  We miss you and will never forget you.

A Time for Change

I know I haven’t been doing a good job about blogging regularly for the last couple of months.  It’s been what, two weeks since the last post?  The same old excuses apply this time, especially about being sick.  That’s what bugs me the most, it seems like I was constantly feeling unwell throughout the past year which really got in the way of everything.  It even got in the way of my pre-season training for work (it’s tax season again).  Which is why I decided to make some changes.  A new year is a time for resolutions, so my first one is to devote myself to healthier living.  So far what that amounts to is forcing myself through fitness videos at least once every other day and going through recipes.  The recipe thing is the big thing.  I have piles of nutritious (and not so nutritious) recipes that I have collected from various sources, and most of them are untouched.  I thought I would start small and try at least one new recipe per week.  If it’s a good one, I will probably make it several times until I’ve mastered it.  That’s what is happening with this week’s recipe, miso soup.  I found the recipe on the package for the miso.  It’s easy to follow and I have even developed a quick way to make it in the microwave.

Another resolution that may be more relevant to this blog, clutter control.  I think it’s easier to show what I mean than to type it.

Polaroid

This is the current state of my crafting space.  Enough said.  Sadly this is only slightly worse than it’s normal state.  And notice that blue plastic bag under the pile on my chair, that’s a bag of supplies I bought at SAS recently.  As if I really needed anymore.  I’ll show what I got tomorrow, it’s important since it will be the last craft purchases I’ll make for quite some time.  I intend to straighten up my space, sort though my stash, and craft strictly with what I have on hand for as long as possible this year.  Wish me luck, I may need it.

Oops, I forgot.

I forgot to mention this here, but I signed up for a pinterest account.  Just what I need right?  Another account that needs to be “maintained” regularly.  I just wanted to try it out, so many people I know have been raving about.  However, most people seem to think of Pinterest as a way to promote oneself.  I guess it sort of works for that, but I'm using it more as an organization tool.  That is was it was created for, I think.  For example, let’s say I wanted to get a jump on my project list for Christmas.  I just set up a board for it and pin all the cute Christmassy tutorials I find everywhere.  I’ll have them all conveniently in one spot.  Works pretty well that way for me, how about you?  What do you use Pinterest for?

What Do I Do Now?

After much thought, maybe not enough, I signed up for a Twitter account today.  Yep, I’m on Twitter, and I am totally freaking out now.  In my mind I’m thinking “What do I do now?  What was I thinking, I don’t know how to use this thing.  Why? Why? WHY?!!”  and so on.  Ever had this sort of reaction when trying something new?  I don’t really understand it, but I think it’s because I am looking at “the big picture” instead of all the smaller bits.  At first glance to this beginner's eye, Twitter looks like something incredibly huge and complicated.  I just need to break it down into smaller details, learn how to do it bit by bit.  I’ll get it eventually, I hope.

I Won!!

I got a little behind on reading my blog feeds again.  So when catching up this morning I was surprised to find that I won a random drawing on Organize and Decorate Everything.   I started shrieking, then ran down the hall with my computer in hand to tell my family, then started dancing for joy.  I can’t wait for it to get here so I can see everything, there’s a picture of it here and a list but there’s suppose to be a surprise in it too.  I’ll definitely post photos when it arrives.  Open-mouthed smile

We’re Back!

1needlefairy-graphicsfairy003 Yesterday I mentioned something about possibly having an announcement to make today.  Well, all preparations have be set.  The news is………

I reopened my Etsy shop.  Several of you may be thinking "she had an Etsy shop? Since when?”  I only mentioned it in some of my earlier posts, and I haven’t really done anything with it in the past few months for various reasons.  Why open it back up now?  First off, I kind of missed it.  They are fun to run after all.  Second, a few days ago a friend of mine commented on something I made which made me happy.  Lastly, I have been crafting up plenty of stuff for the last few months and I am running out of places to store them, I desperately need to unload them all.  Please take a look and let me know what you think, I could always use some feedback.  Feels good to be back at it :)
