It’s In the Bag!

Epic Thrift Bag Sale

This past weekend I stopped by the last day of Epic Thrift’s Back to School Bag Sale.  I really didn’t want to miss it because of how great the last bag sale was (see Bagging It on Black Friday).  I wanted to show off share what I scored at the sale. I’m afraid the pictures were taken as soon as I got back from work that evening.  Bad lighting ahead.

I found a pair of Julius the monkey pajama pants as well as some nice pillowcases.  Perfect for bedtime, or possibly to cut up for sewing other things.  I saw a pair of Hello Kitty pajama pants too, but they were too big.  It’s hard to see at the bottom of the photo, but I also found a pair of long white gloves.  They were easy to fit in the bag and I thought they might come in handy.  I also got a white curtain that I thought was a sheet until I saw the loops for a rod.  It will still work, I can either use it for sewing or for taking pictures.

The blue dress on the left is actually made of terry cloth, as in towels.  I thought it was really cute and comfy, plus it would be perfect after swimming.  The other blue dress I kind of took a chance on, it may or may not work for me.  That’s one of the good things about bag sales, you can squeeze in extra items you may not normally consider otherwise.

And yes, that is a Barbie movie.  Barbie’s The Princess and The Pauper, I actually like it.  It’s really funny, especially the bloopers at the end.  Remember, all Barbie movies have bloopers you don’t want to miss.  Plus, remember to check out movies from the library for free before buying.  That way if you hate them you didn’t waste any money.

Three pink tops, can you tell I like pink?  Two of them are polo shirts, I guess there is something about a pink polo.  It just looks so cute, on men as well as women too.  Of course that a completely different topic.

It’s hard to see the black skirt, but it’s a short A-line skirt and simple but super cute.  I’ve already worn it, it works with practically everything and is really comfortable.  Can you tell I really like this skirt?

The skirt on the right has pretty embroidery on the edge and looks like it’s hand made.  It does remind me of a white and brown skirt I got before at a bag sale.  Sad this about that one is that I haven’t worn it because it doesn’t match anything.

I also took a quick peek at housewares and found three really pretty saucers.  They have gold edging and two of them have English violets painted on them.  I sadly couldn’t find the matching tea cups.  Maybe another time.

Why in the world are black clothes so hard to photograph?  Anyway, from the left is a see through lace top, a sheer black blouse and a black vest with lace on the sides.  Basically three pieces that require me to wear another top underneath for the sake of modesty.  They are also all small things I took a chance on.

Here is a couple of basic tank tops and a really cute red violet sleeve less top.  It has lace, pin tucks and ruffles and it ties in back and on the front.  It look really pretty on me too.  I wore it the other day with the cute A-line black skirt.  Told you it works with everything.

Another black top that wouldn’t photograph well, it’s a nice button down that fits me well.  It actually has nice looking cuffs with cute buttons.  I also got a pair of embroidered napkins and a wallet that looks just like the one I currently have.  At least it has the same design for things like pockets and stuff.  It even has a built in keychain, just like my current wallet which is why I like it.  It’s really handy to have my keys attached to my wallet.

I know it’s still Summer, but I like to plan ahead so I got these pretty long sleeved tops.  They will come in handy when it finally cools down here.  I also got this short sleeved bolero, it’s perfect to use year round.

More trouble with black clothing.  The black velvety dress is so adorable, I would actually wear it now if it weren’t so warm outside.  I also found another pair of black pants for work and a special pair of jeans.  Special because they actually fit me.  I have the most trouble finding jeans that fit me.  They are either perfect everywhere but the waist, or fit the waist perfectly and are baggy everywhere else.

And the best piece.  A coat.  Yes more planning ahead for Winter.  I’ve always had trouble finding cute coats on sale, no matter what the season.  That’s another good thing about bag sales.  It doesn’t matter what the price tag says, it only matters that it fits in the bag.  Of course things fit better in the bag when you know how to roll it.  Rolled up clothing takes up much less space than folded, meaning you can fit more in the bag than usual.  That’s why I could get so much in the bag.

Speaking of which, here are the totals:

  • 4 white pillow cases (1 with lace!)
  • 2 floral print pillow cases
  • 1 white “curtain”
  • 1 pair cute pajama pants
  • 1 pair long white gloves
  • 3 dresses
  • 2 skirts
  • 3 pink short sleeve tops
  • 2 long sleeve tops
  • 3 black tops
  • 1 vest
  • 1 bolero
  • 1 small piece wall art
  • 1 Barbie DVD
  • 2 pretty napkins
  • 1 pink wallet
  • 1 pair black pants
  • 1 pair jeans that actually fit
  • 3 sleeve-less tops
  • 3 pretty saucers
  • 1 cute coat

38 items total for $20 plus sales tax.  A pretty good haul.  Still can’t wait for the next sale.

Heart that Holds

I got the idea for a small heart shaped purse some time ago, I thought it would be cute for my niece.
photos 894
I made it from the leg of an old pair of jeans and part of a cotton dress for the lining.  I shredded strips of of denim to make the strap and the little ruffle.  I love the contrast between the denim and the shredded edge.  My niece absolutely loved it when she saw it, she stuffed it full of little odds and ends.  Maybe I’ll make her a matching wallet someday.
Here’s the updated list:
  • Rosettes
  • Doll aprons
  • Zipper charms
  • Refrigerator
  • Heart purse
  • Doll
  • Kitchen sink
  • Cupboards
  • Clothes
  • Vase
  • Dishes
  • Curtains
Five down, seven to go.  Today was something for my niece, tomorrow is something for her little brother.

There’s Something in My Pocket

I got the idea for making removable pockets once while putting on my choir robe.  It would be handy to have a pocket to hold money and what not, but I didn’t think they would allow me to do something permanent to the robe.
photos 715
So here’s the solution.  I cut off the back pockets from a pair of jeans and decorated them with trim from a shirt I got years ago from a nearby discount store.  The shirt was only 50 cents and cuter without the trim, so no loss.
photos 721
Here’s what makes them removable.  I sewed on a pinback to each pocket.  I can pin them on to just about anything I want, then remove or move them around whenever and however I want.  Pretty nifty right?

photos 723While I was at it, I made this mini one with one of the front pockets.  I trimmed it with some lace instead for a subtle touch.  I think this one is more versatile because of it’s smaller size.  I may even wear it as a pin or brooch just for the fun of it.
Here’s the updated list:
  • hangers
  • bed
  • mirror
  • dresser
  • skirt
  • pocket
  • lamp
  • night stand
  • wardrobe
  • rug
  • framed art
  • curtains
Six down, six to go.  Now back to the miniatures.

Speaking of Uses for Jeans

Here’s a classic project I love.  It’s the one where you make a bag from jeans, I call them bum bags because that’s what part you use.

I decided to make a decent sized one because I have a tendency to carry a ton of stuff wherever I go.  Frankly, my jeans aren’t large enough to accommodate my needs, so I used a pair of my Mom’s.  Don’t worry, she gave them to me, she wore them out completely.

photos 680

It’s just a simple matter of cutting off the legs and stitching up the opening and then going on from there.  I used this lacy material to line the bag and for further embellishment.  I didn’t have to embellish too much because the jeans already had these cute studs and appliqués on them.  Finish up with straps and a zipper and now I have another bag to lug around my life’s essentials.

Here’s the updated list:
Six down, three to go.  Almost done now.

Another Use for Jeans

Another Use for Jeans I was browsing around the internet the other day, and I came across this tutorial that totally blew my mind.  Check it out here at HOME MAKER, it’s for making a basket with old jeans.

She cut off all the seams from two pairs of jeans to make an adorable basket for Easter.  When I saw it I was like “wow!”, of all the things to make with jeans, I would have never thought of baskets.

I so want to make one eventually.  It would be so cool, baskets are great in warmer weather for picnics and the beach, etc.  Who knows, it might end up on my next list, just try to pretend to be surprised about it.

Cut and Paint

photos 158 I made the “cutoff” shorts, but they aren’t exactly cutoffs because I hemmed them.  I think they look nice hemmed.  I cut flowers from printed fabric for appliqués and outlined them with sparkly blue squeeze tube fabric paint.  I dabbed some paint on the button and metal things so they wouldn’t look naked.
photos 159
I added a couple flowers to the back pockets too, because it looked weird with them being plain and the front so pretty.  Not sure if you can tell, but I cut the bottom of the tag with pinking shears.  I thought it sort of spruces it up a bit.
photos 163
The shorts aren’t “cut” but the capris I made sure are with fringe to boot.
photos 167

I added bric-brac trim and dots of pink fabric along the edges.
photos 165
The dots are along all the pockets and the belt loops too.  Maybe a little much, but once you start dabbing the paint on it is so hard to stop.  I was about to move on to nearby objects, my desk lamp looked like it could use a touch along with my sewing machine.
Here’s the updated list:
  • skirt
  • dress shorts
  • bookmarks
  • boxes
  • key necklace
  • cutoffs
  • embellished wedges
  • rings
  • soap
  • Top
  • luggage makeover
Six down, five to go. Nearly ready for summer.

Well Skirted

photos 127
These jeans were forcibly handed down to me.   They didn’t fit very well in some parts, so I never liked them.  The waistband was interesting and it screamed to be made into a skirt.  Otherwise it’s your basic jeans to skirt conversion.  Usually for these kind of things, I just leave the edge to fray, but I decided to hem the bottom of this.  It’s classier, plus the jeans were stretch and the elastic threads looked funny.  I used some scraps from an old skirt to make a sash for a finishing touch.  Now I’ve got a brand new skirt to squeeze into my overloaded closet.  Maybe it’s time for some clearing out.
Here’s the updated list:
  • skirt
  • dress shorts
  • bookmarks
  • boxes
  • key necklace
  • cutoffs
  • embellished wedges
  • rings
  • soap
  • Top
  • luggage makeover
One down, ten to go.  Next is the shorts, assuming dress shorts are possible.

Better than Bracelets, a Project List Update

photos 092 Another project done from the list, waistband cuffs.  Technically I only made one from jeans, the other ones are from a plaid skirt and cameo print cargos, bet you can’t guess which.
I used the skirt because I loved the cute buckle it had and the plaid was a nice touch.  I made the cameo one because it looks like something a guy might actually wear, although I’m not sure about it.  And the jean cuff is made with a cotton polka dot print I’ve had for far too long.  Ever found some fabric somewhere, be it a craft store or thrift store, and loved it to death yet you always put off actually using it.  Because you’re “saving” it for the perfect project that you may never find, so it just sits there gathering dust.  This was the case with the print and I just got sick of it so I used it.  I’m also planning on using it for one of the other projects, so look forward to it.
Now the updated list:
  • Ribbon headbands
  • Jean waistband cuffs
  • Jewelry with crescent moons and stars
  • Tote bag with umbrella appliqués
  • Something square
  • Watermelon shaped oven mitts, maybe with matching accessories
  • Cell phone sleeping bag
  • Change purse key chains
  • Monster plush key chains
  • Strawberry pins and magnets
  • Painted binder clips
  • bottle cap pins
  • zipper charms
  • butterflies
Four down, ten to go.
