Sink or Swim

photos 055
Here’s the little sink, now I’ve got a matching cardboard bathroom set.  I used aluminum foil for the faucet just like I did with the bathtub (see Rub a Dub), and I wanted to use purple beads for the knobs too, but I couldn’t find anymore.  I guess these ones will have to do.  I added a touch of lace for a skirt to pretty it up.  Maybe I’ll use the same stuff for the curtains, nothing like a little coordination, right?
Here’s the updated list:
  • bunny hat
  • hair clips
  • toilet
  • curtains
  • rug
  • sink
  • sweater redo
  • bathtub
Six down, just two to go.  Nearly done, yay!

Dear John

Miniature Cardboard Toilet
Yes, it is a toilet, made from cardboard just like the bathtub.  I’m starting to really get into corrugated cardboard.  And why not, it’s lightweight, super easy to work with and mold, and it’s free.

The toilet was pretty simple, except it came out a little rough.  And the proportions are a little off.  It kind of reminds me of those mini-toilets you see all over the internet.  Try Googling “mini toilet” and you will see what I mean.  Maybe it will look better with a fuzzy toilet seat cover.  Can’t wait to start on the sink, the construction should be very similar.

Here’s the updated list:
Five down, three to go. The rest will be a cinch.

Frills and Lace

Purple Sweater with Ruffled Lace

I saw this sweater tutorial on Tea Rose Home and totally loved it.  I decided to make something similar to it except I used ruffley lace instead of ruffles.  Although ruffles are pretty and feminine, too many make me look like I’m in costume.  This sweater is just right for me and looks lovely with dresses or t-shirts.

Simple Lace Pin with Pearls
Since I had the lace out, I decided to make a pretty little pin to match.  I’ve just been into pins lately, and this was so simple.  I just formed a bow, like the kind used for presents, and stitched it in place.  Then I glued on some faux pearls and attached it to a pin back.  It would probably make a nice little gift for someone, but who?  Hmmm.

Here’s the updated list:
Four down, four to go.  Exactly even.

Craft to Save

While researching for other nearly unrelated topics, I stumbled upon this blog I now love.  It’s called ThriftyChick and it has these cool recycling tutorials and deals to save money.  Here it talks about making your own breakfast cereal and here it has a link to a tutorial to make jewelry out of your old credit cards.  Maybe it’d work for old bus passes and school ID cards.

Rub a Dub

photos 029
I meant to start on the toilet, but I forgot and made the bathtub instead.  Sorry about the lousy photo, I had some technical difficulties.  It is made from corrugated cardboard, sort of matches the house (see Home Sweet Home and Maybe a Campout).  I used little beads for the legs and the nozzles and made the spout from aluminum foil.  With a little bit of paint it came out great.  I’ve always loved bathtubs with legs, my grandma has one and we used to rent a house that had two.
Here’s the updated list:
  • bunny hat
  • hair clips
  • toilet
  • curtains
  • rug
  • sink
  • sweater redo
  • bathtub
Three down, five to go.  Maybe now I’ll get started on the toilet.

Snap and Shine

photos 021
I saw some pretty hair clips a while back that I wanted to get, but I didn’t really feel like paying 3 bucks for them.  If I want pretty sparkly hair clips I’ll make them myself.  For these I used some clips I already had lying around the house.  They’re those kind that snap open and close.  I used some squeezed tube fabric paint to perk them up.  I made the mistake of painting them while snapped open the first time.  When I snapped them shut, the dots of paint flew off around the center.  Second time around, it worked fine.  Now I have cute custom-made hairclips with no extra cost.  Yay!
Here’s the updated list:
  • bunny hat
  • hair clips
  • toilet
  • curtains
  • rug
  • sink
  • sweater redo
  • bathtub
Two down, six to go.   Still researching the others.

It’s a Small, Small World

I was doing a little research for a few of the projects on my list (still working on it, just a little behind), and came across this blog that I totally love.  It’s called Fluffy Bricks,  it showcases doll house stuff and miniatures.  The most recent post shows off some tiny little I-pods and what appears to be a flat screen TV and a Wii.  Never thought about making things like that in miniature, now I so what to try it.  Of course I have to finish the projects I already started first,  otherwise I’d be stuck with like several dozen half-finished projects and nothing to really show for my effort.  Better get cracking at it.

Birthday Bunny

photos 017
Yesterday was my niece’s sixth birthday so I made her this hat.  Yes it is a bunny, not a puppy.  I got the idea from this site, mine turned out a little different.  It’s made from a t-shirt decorated with felt scraps, buttons and little bows.  My niece did like it at first, until her mother managed to convince her that it was a “baby” hat, now she won’t wear it because she’s not a baby.  I told her it’s not for babies, but she won’t listen.
Here’s the updated list:
  • bunny hat
  • hair clips
  • toilet
  • curtains
  • rug
  • sink
  • sweater redo
  • bathtub
One down, seven to go.  What to tackle next?  Hmm.

Whining Time: Peace and Quiet?

Whining Time: Peace and Quiet?
Ever gone to a library and found it would be quieter if you worked outside, if not you are so very lucky.  If so, I feel your pain.

It’s strange because I remember, when I was little being taught that you must speak softly in the library and to be very quiet so not to disturb others who are reading and working.  It seems that either I’m the only one who was taught this, or I’m the only one who remembers.

I always see people at my local library chatting away or talking on their phones which is worst.  The other day I over-heard a man on his phone talking from all the way across the room.  The ironic thing is he was mostly telling his friend that he “couldn’t talk now because he was at the “library”.

The worst case happened some time ago.  I was trying to do some work on the second floor, and apparently there was some sort of lecture or conference going on in one of the rooms.  No problem there, I guess the walls are sound proof or something.  But when it let out, the place started to rumble like an earthquake coming.  About 2 or 3 dozen people came out to wait to take the elevator, all talking in unison.  It sounded like a concert had ended.

In a word, I felt pissed.  I thought of telling them all to shush because it is a “library”, but considering the mood I was in,  I didn’t think it would have been wise to open my mouth.  Who knows what would have come out.  I’m surprised none of the librarians or staff said anything about it.  They’re all probably too used to the volume level to really notice anymore.  I feel kind of bad for them.  At least I can leave if it bothers me too much.
