Sparkly Tulle Phone Case with Tutorial

Here’s another makeover project. 

This time I’m taking my plain old cell phone case and making it super pretty.  And I made a tutorial, so you can try it too!

Here’s what you need:

• An old phone case
• A large scrap of tulle or another pretty lightweight fabric
• Scissors
• Tissue paper
• Pencil
• Various glues, see below for recommendations.
• Something to spread glue (sponges, cotton balls, etc.)
• Gems, beads and other embellishments

Here is my old phone case.  I ordered it online, but it didn’t look quite as pretty as the product photo.  It’s suppose to be rose gold, however it looks darker and blander in person.  Time to change that.

First you cover the phone case with tissue paper and trace around it to make a pattern for your fabric.  I’m using gift tissue I got on clearance last Christmas.

Mark areas that shouldn’t be covered, like the camera hole thingy.

Then carefully cut out your paper pattern and compare it to you case.  Trim off edges and such as necessary.

Pin the pattern to your fabric of choice and carefully cut out. 

I’m using this pretty sparkly tulle.  I’ve used it for this fairy costume dress and this wrap skirt (also for a costume), and now it’s being used for a phone.

One thing that will help make this part easier is ironing the fabric (yes, tulle can be iron on really low heat).  If it helps, you can also try tracing your tissue pattern on thicker paper if it’s too hard to use otherwise.

Next is to glue on the fabric by spreading the glue on the phone case and then apply the fabric, smoothing it down as you go. 

I recommend using Mod Podge, but you can also use Tacky Glue.  It’s best to water down the Tacky glue so it’s easier to spread.  I forgot to do that, and it shows.

Let the glue dry for a few minutes, and then dab more in areas that seem to need it.  This is also a good time to trim off any excess fabric that you might have missed before. 

Then set the case to the side to dry some more.

After it is dried completely, you can have fun gluing on gems, pearls, and anything else you want.  I recommend using Aleene’s Jewel-It for this part. 

Let the whole thing dry for about a day, then show off your pretty new phone case.

Pretty Pill Organizer or Another Way to Store Craft Supplies?

Here’s a nifty idea that I have been dying to try for months.  Decorating a pill organizer to make it cute or pretty.

I got the idea from this video on YouTube.  There’s other ideas there too, but this one stuck out at me.  I almost immediately got a pill organizer from the dollar store and……let it sit around.  Just gathering dust.

But let’s finally gather the supplies and do it. 

I used some gems and flat back pearls, lace, scissors, and two types of glue.  Aleene’s tacky glue and Aleene’s Jewel-it, my favorite glues. :)

The Jewel-it is specially for the gems since that’s what it is designed for, and it does a great job.  The tacky glue is for the lace because it just needs a good strong glue.  You could probably use a glue gun too if you are in a hurry.

Anyway, I just glued the lace around the organizer, being careful not to block the lids for the little compartments.  Oh boy, is that a bad shot.  These photos were taken on a rainy day. :(

Then I added a few pearls and a large gem in the center.  I could have added more, but I wanted something more subtle.  You could also decorate with bows, ribbon, flowers, etc.

Now the final step is to fill it, but I’m not going to fill it with medicine or supplements though that is a good idea.

I’m using it for craft supplies.  These organizers are perfect for storing things like jewelry findings and snaps.  Keeps them secure and neatly organized, in the cutest way possible.

Pink and Sparkly, A Knit Dress and a Costume?

The good news, I finished two more projects on my crafts list perfectly on time.  The bad news, I actually forget to post them here.  Several other things came up over the holiday and that’s life.

Anyway, the first project I made was a really cute knit pink dress.

I started with this great knit fabric I found at SAS.  It’s so soft and super stretchy.

I started to make a circle skirt using this tutorial, only I skipped adding a seam allowance and a zipper because I am using knit fabric.  No need for zippers!

For the top, I used a knit tank top as a guide to cut the front and back pieces.  I also cut a rectangle of fabric to cover the middle of the front side.

This special rectangle was cut into strips after sewing to the front of the dress.

Each strip was then gathered in the center like a cute bow.  I added pink rhinestones to the center of each “bow” to make it extra pretty.

After sewing the top to the skirt and hemming everything, here’s the finished dress.  It came out wonderfully and it’s really comfortable to wear. 

The only problems I had with it was with my sewing machine.  I’m afraid my beloved sewing machine is on it’s deathbed.  I will soon be getting a new one.  You will hear more about that later.

Anyway, this new dress isn’t just pretty but very versatile.  It just needs the right accessories.

I started by making another, larger circle skirt with this sparkly tulle.  It’s leftover from the tulle I used to make a Halloween costume years ago.  For this skirt, I cut it down to open the circle and curved the corners and little.

Then I added a long ribbon along the waist area and left long ribbon tails to tie it.

I made sure to carefully melt the cut edges so they wouldn’t unravel.  I used a lit candle for this, a scented candle.  It was tricky, but effective.

The result is a sparkly tulle wrap skirt.  It can be easily worn over dresses and such to add a little something extra.

And there’s more accessories…

I cut strips of some plain tulle and carefully glued rhinestones to it in a straight line.

After trimming and adding a clasp, I had a rhinestone necklace.  I also did the same thing to make matching bracelets.

When worn the tulle isn’t very visible, so it looks like the rhinestone are glued on to me.

That’s not the only thing I added rhinestones to, I added some to these old wings to perk them up.  They are the same ones from that old Halloween costume.  I also added rhinestones to a headband to match the necklace and bracelets.

Add all these accessories to that simple cute dress and…

…It’s a Halloween costume!

I dressed as a pink crystal fairy this year.  It came out great right?

The best part is that all the pieces can be used for so many other costumes or for everyday outfits.  The tulle wrap skirt pink dress would be great for a dressy outfit for a Christmas party, maybe with the right accessories?
