Sailor Moon Gashapon Toy Unboxing

It’s up a little later than I had planned, but it’s finally ready.

Sailor Moon Gashapon Unboxing. Cute capsule toys from Japan.

My Sailor Moon gashapon unboxing!

For those who don’t know, a gashapon or Gachapon is a capsule toy from Japan.  Like the tiny toys you see selling for 25 or 50 cents in those little machines at grocery stores.

Kind of like that, only much better.  They are usually better quality and with a wider variety to choose from.  For more information about them, check this video from Only in Japan.

Anyway, as you saw in my Comicon haul video (see Phoenix Comicon Shopping Haul and Grab Bag Opening), I received several gashapons from my grab bags, all Sailor Moon ones.

Since opening them was so special to me, I chose to make it a separate video.  And now you can finally see for yourself.  Be prepared for a couple of surprises.

Enjoy the video!

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform

Now finally, the last project on my craft project list.  This one was necessary for an event that’s happening this very weekend,  Phoenix Comicon!

I have been going every year for the pass few years wearing some of my pretty dresses each time (see Catching Up - Conventions Anyone?), and I wanted to make something different this year.  What special item did I sew for this year?

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: The Sketch

A school uniform.

A sailor style one to be exact, seen all over anime and manga and a classic for cosplay.  Plus they are super cute even for everyday wear.  To make mine I used multiple resources.

My main source for inspiration was this video tutorial for making a sailor style top with a t-shirt.  This instantly made my task easier.

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: Cutting the Collar

Instead of using the pattern from the video, I found a great free pattern for the sailor collar here.  It came with a a sleeve pattern too for a Sailor Moon/Sailor Scout costume.  Whatever, it works great for this.

The fabric I used it a dark blue poly poplin I got at SAS.  I decided to use poplin because of how well it worked for all the purple bags I made before (see Purple and Lace).  I chose dark blue because I thought it was more versatile than my first choice for color, pink.  Still I may try that in the future, wouldn’t that be adorable?

Anyway, the collar is ready to sew!

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: Cutting the Skirt

I found this cute video tutorial for making a pleated skirt made by the same person who made the first video.  It helped a lot, at least for the pleating part.  I did my own thing for the zipper and waistband.  The piece I cut for the skirt is approximately 14 inches by 60 inches.

Just need to pin the pleats (I had to do it over cause they went crazy on me)…

…and add a zipper, waistband, and hem it…

…then make the collar with ribbon trim…

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: Making the Cuffs

…deal with the cuffs, add accessories, piece things together and then…

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: Cute School Uniform

…It’s done!  Looks great all put together.

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: Bow and Collar

The bow on the front came out a little bigger than I expected, but I think it still looks good.

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: Pin-on Bow

Plus if I change my mind about it later there’s no problem.  It pins on.

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: Sailor Collar

The collar came out well too.  It is only attached to the top at the back.  The front ends can be unhooked to make it easier to pull on and take off.

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: The Cuff

The cuffs were tricky because not only did I have have gather the sleeve slightly to sew them on, but I forgot to add the ribbon trim before sewing the cuffs on.  I sewed it on by hand afterwards.

I couldn’t make up my mind whether I wanted the ribbon along the bottom of the cuff or the top end.  I guess it looks fine like this.

Sailor Moon? No, Just a Uniform: Cute Bow Hair Clips

And to complete the look I made simple little bow hair clips from scraps of fabric.  I have a ton of this blue poplin leftover, will they be more uniform style outfits in the future?  Only time will tell.

Here’s the updated list:

Eight down and out.  All that’s left is Phoenix Comicon and a little surprise afterwards.  Look forward to it.

Moon Cosmic Power!

Any Sailor Moons fans?  Found this cute game thing online, a Sailor Senshi Maker.  It let’s you create your own sailor scout and customize it to your liking.  It’s really fun.  Here’s the one I made.

sailo senshi

Not too bad for a first try, but I think it looks too much like Sailor Moon.  Still cute though.  I’ll try again later.

In the Name of the Moon

I got this up way later than I had intended to due to technical difficulties, and human error.  I’m house sitting this week, away from home.  I realized I didn’t pack my camera, so I had to use the webcam on my netbook which is a little shall we say, temperamental.  Plus photo quality is lousy, so I apologize for the blurriness of the picture.
photos 780Anyway, here’s the surprise.  The doll costume I made is Sailor Moon.  I had been think of making a Sailor Moon costume for some time now.  I am a bit of a fan, plus the design of the outfit is pretty easy to make and still really cute.  I just can’t wait to show this to my niece, she will flip.  She actually wants me to make her a Sailor Moon costume too, maybe another day.  For the costume, I used scraps of material from some dresses I cut up for some costumes for myself, including the one I made for Halloween(see Two New Outfits, One Special Day).  I added premade bows from the enormous stash of them I have that I’m still trying to find uses for,  someday they all will be gone.  The tiara and hair jewels are made from ornament hook wire and a couple of buttons decorated with sparkly paint.  Looks pretty good, except that I get the feeling that I’m missing something.  By the way, she’s wearing a pair of plastic doll boots that didn’t quite make it into the photo, Sailor Moon has got to have her footwear right?
Here’s the updated list:
  • Tube top
  • Doll costume
  • Card holder
  • Green dress
  • Top recon
  • Polo dress
Two down, four to go.  By the way, my final exam went fairly okay today.  And tomorrow is the first day of my externship, wish me luck. :)

What a Dollar Buys These Days

This weekend, my church had their rummage sale with the dollar a bag sale.  That’s where you get a plastic grocery bag and jam in as much stuff as you can without busting it, the whole thing will only cost one dollar.  Needless to say, I am pretty good at cramming things into bags and came back with plenty of goodies.

I got some more t-shirts and a tank top because you can never have too many.  I live in t-shirts mostly.

photos 176I found this pretty floral top, but I think it’s a little too sheer.  Maybe the tank will come to the rescue.  I grabbed a pair of shorts because most of mine are worn out (see post Shorts No-more).  And in preparing for winter, I found this pretty poncho and a pair of holiday socks.  I have a thing for socks with snowflakes and stuff.

photos 177I found these two skirts, the black one is okay and would be good for work (if I ever find a job), but the other one is really cool.  It’s handmade, possibly a first-time project.  Ah, doesn’t that bring back memories.

photos 178I found these two jackets that would also be good for work, although they are technically a little big on me.  If they won’t work I’ll make them work.  Heh, Heh.  The pink one reminds me so much of Legally Blonde 2, or possibly Barbie.  I use to have a doll that was suppose to be a flight attendant with pink jacket similar to this.  Coffee?

photos 180For fun, I got two Sailor Moon videos, a book and a pink pillow case.  The pillow case and book are perfect together because I do a lot of my reading before bed.   Of course the book it fitting anyway, it’s called Life Lessons Learned While Shopping.
