99 Thanks, or Something Like That

I needed to get some food on the way home from class, and where’s the best place to go that on the way?  99 Cents Only Store of course.  I still don’t know why they still call it 99 cents when everything is now a dollar or less.  Too well invested in that “99” I guess.

Anyway, here’s the shopping list:

• Cabbage.
• Romaine lettuce, it’s organic, a real plus.

• Rye bread, yum!
• Sourdough bread too, it’s good and has a low glycemic index.
• Flour and corn tortillas, couldn’t decide between the two.

• Best Life buttery spread, it’s trans-fat free.
• Dried garbanzo beans, it’s one of my favorite beans, they are great on everything.  Too bad I have to take them back tomorrow.  I noticed that the cashier forgot to scan them, so I wasn’t actually charged for them.  It’s only right to take them back and try to explain what happened.

• Mixed spicy pickled vegetables.
• Pickled tomatoes.
• Pickled asparagus.
• Pickled mushrooms.
• Pickles.  I have a thing for pickled vegetables, not sure why since I can’t stand the smell of vinegar.  Good thing there’s so much of it there.  I wonder if I should have gotten some pickled garlic too? 

I also got some non-food items, but they’re items of a slightly too personal nature and I’d rather not post pictures to the world.   All that’s left for me to do is toast the bread and find a decent use for pickled tomatoes.

Some Help From a Little Fairy

Ever had trouble finding the perfect image for your latest project or whatever, I found the perfect blog for you.  *The Graphics Fairy* is this really cool blog that shows a different piece of free vintage clipart every single day.  That’s where I got this cute typewriter, in case it wasn’t completely obvious.  There are also tutorials using the clip art and showcases of projects other readers have made, just the inspiration you to need to get your fingers moving.  Also a great way to promote yourself, projects featured are linked to the creators’ blogs.

Biology and Felt Collide

I haven’t really touched base in a while about how I’m doing with my  classes.  It’s been okay so far, still getting mostly As and all.  This is the cell model I made for my current class.  All the other students thought the idea of models and dioramas sounded so junior high.  I’m thinking, whatever, it’s fun to do and easy to get a decent grade.  So I got it done right away.  It’s not even due for another week.

For the base I used cardboard, again, made in the shape of a round lid.  I thought about making cute little boxes while I was at it, but let’s stick to one thing at a time.  For all the parts, I used various scraps of felt, some braided trim for the mitochondria, and I used part of an old zipper for the endoplasmic reticulum.  I had used the zipper for another project and it was too long, so I cut it down to size.  I’ve been saving the cut off part forever, it’s funny what things become useful down the road.  I once patched up a pair of shoes with a appliqué I saved from a shirt I cut up many years before.  I actually wear the shoes more than shirt now.

Sink or Swim

Here’s the little sink, now I’ve got a matching cardboard bathroom set.  I used aluminum foil for the faucet just like I did with the bathtub (see Rub a Dub), and I wanted to use purple beads for the knobs too, but I couldn’t find anymore.  I guess these ones will have to do.  I added a touch of lace for a skirt to pretty it up.  Maybe I’ll use the same stuff for the curtains, nothing like a little coordination, right?

Dear John

Yes, it is a toilet, made from cardboard just like the bathtub.  I’m starting to really get into corrugated cardboard.  And why not, it’s lightweight, super easy to work with and mold, and it’s free.

The toilet was pretty simple, except it came out a little rough.  And the proportions are a little off.  It kind of reminds me of those mini-toilets you see all over the internet.  Try Googling “mini toilet” and you will see what I mean.  Maybe it will look better with a fuzzy toilet seat cover.  Can’t wait to start on the sink, the construction should be very similar.

Frills and Lace

I saw this sweater tutorial on Tea Rose Home and totally loved it.  I decided to make something similar to it except I used ruffley lace instead of ruffles.  Although ruffles are pretty and feminine, too many make me look like I’m in costume.  This sweater is just right for me and looks lovely with dresses or t-shirts.

Since I had the lace out, I decided to make a pretty little pin to match.  I’ve just been into pins lately, and this was so simple.  I just formed a bow, like the kind used for presents, and stitched it in place.  Then I glued on some faux pearls and attached it to a pin back.  It would probably make a nice little gift for someone, but who?  Hmmm.
